Laura Mae Barksdale Brown

Laura Mae Barksdale Brown, 88, joined her husband, Mack, eldest son, David, parents and nine brothers and sisters in heaven on Friday, May 10, 2013.
“Mae”, as she was known by family and friends, was born to Mary and Joseph Barksdale of Nathalie, Virginia on May 4, 1925. She moved from Danville to Newport News, Virginia after graduating from high school at the age of 16. While working at a drug store, she met her future husband, Mack Amory Brown, one of “Roger’s Rangers” of downtown Newport News. They married in 1944, and upon Mack’s return from WWII they lived in Newport News and then Hampton. They moved to York County in 1964.
Mae was the loving mother of Wayne Brown (Joan), Alan Brown (Betsy) and Karen Kennedy (Loren) and loving mother-in-law of Brenda, David’s wife. She had 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She also leaves behind many special nieces & nephews, extended family and church friends.
Mae loved the Lord and was very active in women’s mission work and with her Joy Circle and Sunday School at Seaford Baptist Church.
The family wishes to thank all her family, friends, and the staff of Morningside Assisted Living-Newport News who have loved her and seen to her needs throughout her life.
The family will receive friends 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Seaford Baptist Church, 1311 Seaford Rd., Seaford, VA. A celebration of Mae’s life will begin at 1:00 PM in the church followed by interment in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Seaford Baptist Church Building Fund.
