He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claudette M. Bates; sons, Marvin T. Bates, Jr. (Judy) and Johnny R. Bates; daughter, Claudine B. Womble (A.G.); 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Clarence Bates (Carolyn); and sister-in-law, Josette Loviner.
Marvin joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and served his country with distinction. He retired in 1972 after 20 years with several tours including Vietnam and Germany. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and major league baseball.
A private service for family members to be arranged. Interred at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
