Mary R. James was born June 27, 1942, to Gaither and Mary Ramseur in Salisbury, North Carolina. Most of her early education and faith life were in the China Grove, North Carolina community. She entered into eternal life on Wednesday, June 6, 2018.

Mary graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a degree in Elementary Education. It was at Winston-Salem that she met and later married Steven C. James. Mary began her career as an elementary school teacher with the Hampton City School System. She continued working in her chosen profession in the Newport News City School System where she remained until her retirement. Married for 52 years, she and Steve shared a happy and blessed life together along with their precious daughter, Shari – the expressed love of their lives. She and Steve spent many wonderful and joy-filled years traveling the world with their closest friends, Elbert and Vivian Walker, creating treasured memories.

To know Mary James was to love her and because of her unique sense of humor, vivacious, loving and caring personality, she had numerous extended family members which she chose from her concept of the word “friends.” Beginning with her acquired marriage family and her intimate family relationships with the Mann, Walker, and her St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church Community, she continued to be the greatest gift to those who knew and cherished her.

As an active member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, she was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary (3rd and 4th Degrees), a Eucharistic Minister, and a volunteer with the St. Vincent Food Pantry. She was also a Trustee of the Historic Neely School Foundation Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Birthday Girls, and Richneck Raccoons. She was a long-time, dedicated member of the Striker’s 1 Relay for Life Team of the American Cancer Society as well as an avid bowler.

She was preceded in rest by her parents, mother and fathers-in-law, Mr. Edward R. James, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Weddie Gabriel, and brother-in-law, William James. Mary leaves to mourn her passing her beloved, faithful and devoted husband, Steven; daughter, Shari C. James; sister, Ruth Williams; sister-in-law, Virginia James; brothers-in-law, Vincent and Edward James; along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, surrogate/adoptive children and a multitude of friends.

Extending heartfelt condolences, love and prayers to Steve, Shari and family. Mary brought joy, love and inclusiveness to all who were blessed enough to know her. She was gracious, vivacious, with a great sense of humor. Her beautiful smile could light up a room. Steve, Mary and Shari exemplified family love, moral values and service to others. A loving marriage of 52 years, a beautiful daughter, travel, shared joys as well as sorrows, family, friends galore all add up to a life well lived. She will live on in the hearts of all whose lives she touched. May God's unfailing love comfort, restore and bless you.

My deepest condolences are offered on the passing of Mary James, yet happy to know that heaven has gained an exceptional angel in their midst! The James family has been a part of my family, The Gaskills, for just about all my life. Mary and Steve have been with us thru holidays, cookouts, marriages, Super Bowl parties, birthdays, anniversaries and funerals. Steve and Mary were always a part of us! I'll miss Mary's sweet gentle presence with always some word of advise or concern about me and my family. Mary was my "Have and Have Not's" partner, we did commentary together via text thru out the whole show..lol . Mary also was my encouraging bowling teammate that always was sure we'd do better next time. Darnell, Tevin and I extend our love to Shari and Steve during this difficult time, my heart is heavy. We're here if you need us.

Sending prayers, condolences and love to the James family. Steve Morgan and I bowled on the same league with Steven and Mary. We were just at the house May 19, 2018 to come visit with her. So glad we were able to spend that time with her. She shared some amazing stories about her family history in NC, her beautiful daughter (her baby girl) that she loved, how she met her wonderful husband Steven in college and how Steven likes to eat (as he kept feeding us) she said he was going to eat it whether we ate it or not LOL, she talked about my shoes that I would come to bowling in (lol) and we watched the Royal Wedding. Such a beautiful kind person from the first time I met her. She will truly be missed. May the family know she is now watching over them - smiling down on them. She has been a good and faithful servant.
