Mary Ann was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on July 11, 1933 and raised by Mary L. and Charles R. Morris, alongside her eleven siblings. Her fondest childhood memories were at her local recreation center, and she later created a long career as a materials handler at the Newport News shipbuilding yard. It was here that she found the love of her life, Kenneth Shackelford.
Though she led fulfilling work at the shipyard and prided herself on her well-earned retirement, Mary Ann was someone who found purpose in bringing people together. She held the noble ambition to create and live in peace.
She and Kenneth made friends with many members of the community, during her time in Poquoson, and her proudest moments were when all her family was together as one. Mary Ann’s loved ones found her at her brightest when she was dancing to country music, wearing some blue, or watching her kids happy, grandkids, and, eventually, great grandkids play. All of her family will miss her deeply.
Mary Ann is preceded in passing by her son, Vernon Wayne (Ike) Rogers; her parents, Mary Lomo Morris and Charles Richard Morris; and her grandparents Maducy Ann Shiffett and John L. Shiffett. She is also predeceased by her sisters, Florence Pucci, Helen Virginia Radcliff, Ruby Arlene Potter, Ellie Morris, and Marie Buckner; and her brothers, Charles Morris, Glen Morris, Elmer Morris, John Morris, and Roy Morris.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Shackelford; her daughter, Shelby (Mike) Bartron; her grandchildren, Barbie Harvey and Mikey Bartron; and her great grandchildren, Brice and Brianna Greene, and Michael, Mason, and Molly Bartron. Mary Ann is also survived by her sister, Katie Rutledge; and her step-children, Selena Phelps and Michael Shackelford. Her memory will also be held by her six step-grandchildren, ten great step-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones for a visitation on Friday, October 30, 2026 at 1:15 pm, located at Parklawn Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue Hampton, Virginia 23666. A celebration of life to honor Mary Ann will follow the visitation at 2:00pm, located at Parklawn Wood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that all donations please be made to the Poquoson Fire Department, whose volunteer staff have cared for Mary Ann’s family and their community for decades.
When you see a hummingbird next, think of Mary Ann and the boundless love she held.
