Melton E. McLawhorn Sr.

Melton was born October 7, 1927, in Pitt County, North Carolina. He was the eldest of four children born to Oliver Melton McLawhorn and Lydia Young McLawhorn.

Melton met his first wife, Ellen while he was employed on the Ferry Boat. She passed away in 1992, and a few years later he married Gladys Sawyer Harrup. He was employed by the Naval Weapons Station for 35 years, from which he retired as a Navy Veteran. He was a member of Seaford Christian Church for many years and he loved his Lord Jesus Christ and his church. Melton moved to Virginia during his childhood years and later built a home in Newport News with his wife and family.

Melton was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen D. McLawhorn; his second wife, Gladys S. McLawhorn; and his sister & brothers: Lois Mitchell, Joseph Clifton McLawhorn and Hubert McLawhorn. He is survived by his four children; Ruth V. McLawhorn of Mechanicsville, Melton E. McLawhorn Jr., of Newport News, Joseph H. McLawhorn of Suffolk and Lavinia McLawhorn of Newport News; his four grandchildren: Mandy Touchstone (Michael) of Texas, Carmittia Gilbert of Williamsburg, Charles Sullivan (Dawn) of Mechanicsville and Michael McLawhorn(Leah) of Hopewell; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Riverside Hospice and the staff at the Gardens of Warwick Forest for everything they did during his final days.

The family will hold a public visitation on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave. Hampton, Va. 23666. The Funeral Service to be lead by Pastor David Willis at 2:00 PM. A graveside committal to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
