Myrna S. Whitson

She was born to parents William Glendive Leroy Skinner and Eleanor Mae Harris Skinner, on the 26th of February 1940 in Edenton, North Carolina. She graduated from Edenton High School in 1958 being voted the cutest by her senior classmates. She went on to study Education at East Carolina University and graduated in 3 1/2 years specializing in Math.

The first 2 years Myrna taught 7th and 8th grade at Aberdeen Jr. High School. The next 30 years of service were at Tucker Capps Fundamental Elementary School teaching 5th graders in room 209. She retired in 1995 after 32 years of service although she taught adults trying to obtain their GED, tutored children in math and reading in her home. She also taught her granddaughter how to read at age 4. Sharing knowledge was one of her callings in life.

Myrna enjoyed crabbing as well as saltwater and freshwater fishing. She cooked, sewed, crocheted a little and was an avid reader her whole life. She treasured the weekend time spent with family dancing to records in the living room, playing a variety of card and board games. You couldn't beat her in Yahtzee and she was always Miss. Scarlet.

Myrna and John Earl started dating in 1956. They were married on July 29 1962 in Edenton NC. Together they raised 4 children John Earl Jr, William Skinner, Jessica Lynn and Sabrina Lynn.

She was preceded in death by William Glendive Leroy Skinner-father, Eleanor Mae Harris Skinner-mother, John Earl Whitson Sr.-husband, Vernell Whitson Babb-sister-n-law.

Myrna is survived by her son John Earl Whitson Jr, (Janet), her son William Skinner Whitson (Mary), her daughter Jessica Lynn Graham and her daughter Sabrina Whitson Justice (John Paul). Her grandchildren Angelo Ryan (LaShawn), Sadie Christine (Matt), William Jordan and Kallumn Nolan (Kaycee). Her great grandchildren Davieon, Angel and Leonardo.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 30, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666. On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, a Celebration of Life will be held Graveside at 3:00 PM to honor Myrna Skinner Whitson.
