

On the wings of angels Pattie Mae Saunders Lewis of Washington, DC departed her earthly home April 16th, 2020, at Sibley Hospital in the District of Columbia after several months of rehabilitation from a mild stroke and advanced dementia.
Pat was born on April 7,1933, in Chatham Virginia, to Jesse Saunders and Lillie Fitzgerald Saunders. She accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Shockoe Missionary Baptist church, Java, VA. She left VA as a young adult and made Washington DC her home. After the achievement of her General Education Diploma, she attended several secondary schools and received her certification as a home health aide and homemaker. For many years, she was employed at the Soldiers Home in Washington DC. She lived life well, surrounding you with laughter, smiles and kindness. During the final years, her favorite pastime was to “go up the road” and play the slot machines. Pat took much pride in giving a helping hand to her family, friends, and community. Despite the many challenges she encountered, Pat was an extremely passionate caregiver. With her profound sense of humor and amazing culinary skills she would fill you with joy and delight. She always shared words of encouragement that inspired you to reach beyond the stars.
Pat was married to the late Retired, Chief Warrant Officer Roscoe Lewis, and was predeceased by her daughter, Serita Marie Lewis, three brothers Elmer, Bennie and Allen Saunders and one sister Thelma M. Younger. Pat’s wonderful memories will be cherished by her grandson Je’marcus Lewis, a lifetime beloved companion George Schexnayder, her beloved brother Clarence Saunders and three sisters-in-law Odessa Saunders, Edna Saunders and Addie Saunders. She leaves to cherish her memories, six great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Her precious memories are also treasured by God children, Pastor Richard A. Thompson III and Darice Little. Pat has many friends who will miss her very much. She was absolutely loved by all, but God loved her best.
The family would like to heartily thank the many physicians, nurses, and caregivers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Sibley Hospital and special thanks to the caregivers of the Lisner Louise Dickson-Hurt Home in Washington, DC.
Due to the current health crisis the homegoing service will be private. A special Memorial Service will be held in her honor later. The private service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2020. She will be laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia (Date to be announced) The family has requested in lieu of flowers please donate to the Pattie M. Lewis Memorial Service Fund.
The family also extends a special “heartfelt” appreciation to Dr. Sherri Saunders-Goldson (niece) and Onnajay Goldson (nephew) and Sandy Saunders (niece) and Honorable Sherman Saunders (nephew) for the love and attention they rendered to Aunt Pat during her illness.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia.
