Gerald was born July 4th, 1938 in Hampton to George and Iris Alcott. He was always pleased that the whole country celebrated his birthday.
Gerald graduated from Hampton High School in 1956. He graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Apprentice School in 1960, where he was the recipient of the Niels Christiansen Craftsmanship Award. He was athletic, playing football and basketball at both Hampton High and the Apprentice School. His career at the Shipyard spanned more than 40 years in positions ranging from a sheet metal apprentice to the Superintendent of Welding. He was a dedicated man with a strong work ethic who loved to mentor others.
In 1959, Gerald married his high school sweetheart Barbara Parrish. They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 11th!
Gerald was an active member of the community. Some of his memberships included the Original Club, the May Club, the Lion’s Club, the Retired Men’s Breakfast Club, and the Aqua Cat Club, Fleet 80. He also coached football and basketball youth teams. He enjoyed boating, traveling the world with his wife and friends, watching sports, and spending time with his family.
Gerald was preceded in death by his two children, Robert G. Alcott Jr., and Lynn Alcott Scoville, parents George and Iris Alcott, sister Margaret Alcott Wellons, an infant brother, and many other loved ones.
Gerald is survived by his wife Barbara, brother Wayne Alcott, grandchildren Laura Scoville, Nicholas Scoville, and Megan Scoville, all of Decatur, IL., son-in-law Robert Scoville of Decatur, IL., nephew Clayton Alcott and his wife Mindy of Arlington, TX., and Wayne’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
