Robert "Dean" Jernigan, 79, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on June 25, 2026. Born on April 16, 1947, in Hampton, Virginia, Dean lived a life defined by service, dedication, and an unwavering love for the people around him.
Dean was the son of the late Walter and Mary Jernigan, and he grew up on the Peninsula, where he would spend nearly all of his life. After completing his early education, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. His military service left a lasting mark on him, both in the discipline and character it reinforced and in the sacrifices it demanded. Dean was a disabled veteran, and he carried that distinction with quiet dignity, never seeking recognition but always deserving of it.
After his time in the Navy, Dean pursued higher education and earned a Master's degree from Old Dominion University. That accomplishment opened the door to what would become his true calling: teaching. Dean was a lifelong educator, and he poured himself into the work of shaping young minds with the same honesty and dedication he brought to everything else in his life. Those who knew him in the classroom and beyond would tell you he was the kind of teacher who genuinely cared, who showed up every day ready to give his best, and who believed deeply in the potential of his students.
Outside of teaching, Dean was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, where he found fellowship and purpose in serving his community. But more than any title or membership, what truly defined Dean was the love he had for his family. It was the center of his world. He was a proud grandfather to Joseph and Eva, and the joy they brought him was immeasurable.
Dean was honest to his core, caring in ways both large and small, giving of his time and energy, and hardworking in every endeavor he undertook. He lived simply and loved deeply, and those qualities touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Craig; his son, Phillip; his daughter, Evamarie; his brother, Lee; and his parents, Walter and Mary.
Dean is survived by his son, Stephen; his brother, Jack; his sister, Debbie; his nephew, Derek and his two beloved grandchildren, Joseph and Eva.
Dean's faith was the foundation of his life, and he found strength, comfort, and purpose in his relationship with the Lord; not just in words but in the way he treated others, in his generosity, and in his steadfast commitment to doing what was right. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now at peace in the arms of his Savior, reunited with those he loved who went before him.
A service celebrating Dean's life will be held on July 17th at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News, Virginia at 1pm. All who knew and loved him are welcome to gather in his memory and give thanks for a life so well lived.
