Roy Edward Gulledge, 79, passed away on April 27, 2026. He will be remembered for his steady presence, strong values, and the way he showed up—for his family, his faith, his country, and his community.
Raised in Ruby, South Carolina, Roy was the son of the late C. Ottis Gulledge and Mary B. Tucker Gulledge. He was preceded in death by his brother, Theron Gulledge; two special nephews, Terry and Jake Gulledge; and an infant brother, Mitchell Gulledge.
Roy was, in every sense, a salt-of-the-earth man. He believed in doing things the right way—being dependable, taking pride in how you carry yourself, and caring for family, friends and neighbors. While he held onto old-fashioned values, he was never stuck in the past. He was curious about the world, open to new ideas, and always up for trying something different—especially when it meant good food or a new place to explore. He also had a quick, wholesome sense of humor and a wonderful way of making people feel at ease.
Roy shared 56 years of marriage with his dear wife, Juanita Gulledge, whom he met and married in the Philippines. Together, they built a life grounded in love and a shared sense of adventure. Whether at home or abroad, they did everything side by side.
He is survived by his children, Josephine Lewis (Robert), Mary Gulledge, and Richard Gulledge (Kathryn); his grandchildren Todd (Heather), Brian (Emily), Ashley, Landon, and Lily; and great-grandchildren Lochlan, Lenox, and Rhett. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Elaine Gulledge, nephew Mitch Gulledge (Mary), and extended family in South Carolina and the Philippines.
Roy served 26 years in the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant, including during the Cold War and Gulf War, earning multiple commendations. He earned an Associate’s degree in Engineering and later graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management.
He was also deeply connected to his community, serving as a Past Master Mason at Leonard Wood Lodge #105, a Shriner, and a member of the American Legion—roles that reflected his belief in service, fellowship, and looking out for others.
Roy appreciated life’s simple, everyday moments. He loved fishing, gardening, cooking, reading, playing the lottery, and a good Netflix marathon. He won’t miss remembering passwords, reading fine print, or texting — but he will be forever missed by those who knew and loved him most.
A visitation will be held on Friday May 8, 2026 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Parklawn Wood Funeral Home, located at 2551 N. Armistead Ave, Hampton VA 23666. A Celebration of life and reception will follow at 3:00 PM.
