Ruth Ann Grimmett

Mrs. Ruth A. Grimmett, lifelong Hampton resident, passed away peacefully at home on October 30, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born in Richmond on September 28, 1945 to the late Leonard M. and Ethel A. Swift of Mila, VA. When Ruth was one year old the family moved to Hampton. She married Roger, the love of her life, on July 11, 1963. They started their family in 1968. When the children were in elementary school Ruth began working as a volunteer teacher’s aide, logging over 1,000 hours in 4 years. She then moved to the cafeteria as a cook for another 4 years. When she was offered a position as clerk at our local 7-Eleven she rose to the position of Regional Supervisor of the deli program. She retired after 15 years of service. During her career, Ruth helped raise thousands of dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She always made sure that any of her employees who worked holidays had good home cooked meals. Along with her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her sisters, Etta Bartlett and Sue Swift. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 54 years, Roger; son, James Grimmett (Samantha) of Yorktown; daughter, Betty J. Barrett of Hampton; grandsons, Christian Jace Grimmett (Becky) of Hampton, Paul R. Grimmett (Brittany), and Ryan J. Grimmett of Yorktown; great-grandsons, Cael and Hunter Grimmett of Hampton; sisters-in-law, Roberta Wheeler and Barbara Grimmett of Hinton, WV; several nieces and nephews; a host of friends from her church family; and many longtime friends and neighbors. The family extends a special thank you to her neighbor and best friend of 48 years, Deanna Campbell, her wonderful, loving and caring aide of 3 years, Brooke Milloy, and the staff at Medi Home Health and Hospice. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Northampton Christian Church, 1409 Todds Lane, in Hampton. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Ruth’s passion for helping others, memorial contributions may be made to the church for the Food Pantry.
