Sally was born in Brookhaven, New York on August 18, 1933. A gifted artist, she found her lifelong love, George, at age 19. After dating for two weeks, George was deployed by the Air Force to Okinawa. They married five days after he returned home and were together until George’s passing 63 years later.
The Air Force life agreed with Sally and she happily lived with George in seven states as well as three years in England. In retired life, they would successfully visit all 50 states through several cross-country trips. After those trips became too difficult, Sally enjoyed feeding and watching the numerous birds that visited her feeders.
The largest portion of Sally’s life was spent in Virginia. There she found three church families that she would love. She contributed to congregational life by delivering hundreds of egg cartons to the Zuni campus of Presbyterian Homes, serving as PW Moderator for Community Presbyterian, advocating for donations to Heifer International and underserved Appalachian communities, worshipping at Lacrosse Memorial Presbyterian, and singing with the Swingin’ Singers at 1st Baptist in Newport News.
Sally loved her family and forged numerous friendships through travels, church fellowship, and Air Force reunions.
In addition to her husband, George, Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Myron and Mabel Sutherland; sister, Doris Adrian; and son, Charles Myron. She is survived by her children, Alan (Debra), Sheryl Senter (Hubert), and Christina Tutterow (Robin); grandchildren, Ian and Harrison Senter and Katrina Willis; and great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Breana, Josiah, and Phillip Willis.
There will be a private graveside service at Hampton-Veterans Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Va 23666. A celebration of Sally’s life will be planned in the months to come when allowed by the COVID pandemic.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Parks Conservation Association or Heifer International.
