

She enjoyed cooking, reading, playing cards, gambling, and being with her family. When Shirley was working for Taylor Wilson, Hampton’s Commissioner of Revenue, Taylor installed a kitchen so Shirley could prepare homemade crab cakes for him. Shirley worked for the City for most of her working life until retirement. She was also a long-time member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Carpenter, Sr.; and son, Harold E. Carpenter, Jr. She is survived by her daughters: Janet Furneyhough (Joey), Sharon Van Dyke (Dick); sister, Joan Stuan; grandsons: Sean Barrett (Kate), Chris Huff, Taylor Stillwell (Jillian), Alex Stillwell, Austin Stillwell; and six great-granddaughters.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 21, 2025 at Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666.
