Susie was born on July 28, 1939, in Gushikawa-shi, Okinawa. She moved to the United States in 1968 after marrying her love and life partner, Jack. As a naturalized citizen and Air Force spouse, she loved the United States and always kept a copy of the pledge of allegiance on hand, but she also fully embraced her Japanese heritage. Some of her fondest memories were of being part of the Japanese community while stationed in Hawaii. The family moved to Hampton in 1980, where Susie established some of her deepest friendships and a successful career as a top Avon salesperson.
Susie loved her family and being involved with her grandchildren and always pushed those she loved to be their very best. She was a league bowler and enjoyed yoga, gardening, and winning at the casino. Susie was active and vibrant and brought joy to all who knew her. Her spirit lives on, but her bright smile and kind spirit will be deeply missed.
Susie is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Jack (November 2018), and is survived by her daughters Josephine (Lucas) and Susanna (Clint) and her four grandchildren, Skyler (Matt), Madison, Gwenivere, and James.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 17, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the wonderful providers at Riverside for their care and compassion and all the flowers, cards, and best wishes from friends and family during Susie’s brave battle with endometrial cancer.
The family has asked that any memorial tributes be made to support Riverside Hospice (via the Riverside Foundation: 701 Town Center Drive, Suite 1000, Newport News, VA 23606 or https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/riverside), or the Japanese Americans’ Care Fund (4022-B Hummer Rd., Annandale, VA 22003 or https://jacarefund.org/donate/).
