Skip was born on January 20, 1947 in New York City to the late Woodrow "Woody" Maust and Lucille "Lucy" A. Maust. Skip came from a military family that afforded him many opportunities to travel to various duty stations around the world including Ramstein, Germany. The family later moved to Hampton, Virginia and he graduated from Hampton High School in 1965.
Skip earned his Juris Doctor from Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary and his Bachelor of Science in Business from Pennsylvania State University. In 1973, Skip became a Virginia State Bar licensed attorney and served as Assistant Commonwealth Attorney until 1976 when he was challenged with becoming the City's first full-time Commonwealth Attorney at the age of 29. Skip still holds the record as the youngest Commonwealth Attorney in Hampton’s history. Skip was an outstanding Commonwealth Attorney for Hampton and held that position until he went into private practice in 1982. In addition to his private practice, Hampton Circuit Court honorably appointed Skip as a substitute judge. Skip was an aspiring leader and a tenacious, but fair, prosecutor and devoted public servant for the City of Hampton.
Skip had many close personal friendships throughout the years. Skip’s dearest friend was his brother “Ron” who preceded Skip in death on August 10, 2011. Skip’s life was never the same after he lost his best friend. His friendship touched the lives of so many as he was very kind and always willing to lend a helping hand or encouraging word when needed.
Skip's most precious gift in life was his son, Matthew, whom he loved unconditionally and to no end. Skip is survived by his beloved son, Matthew Maust, and Matthew’s wife, Amanda. He leaves behind his three nieces Nicole Maust Stuart, Noel Maust Cavanaugh, Tiffany Maust Caldwell, his nephew Brock Ronson Maust, and many loving friends.
Skip and his family would like to offer their deepest gratitude to all of Skip's caregivers over the years, and in particular, Shaun, Lisa, Jamie, Pam, Barbara and Red, who offered such kindness and compassion throughout the various chapters of his life.
