Yvonne Katherine Todd Douglas and her twin sister, Yvette, were born on November 30, 1959. The happy parents, Thomas and Harriette Todd, were overjoyed as they welcomed their second set of twins. Yvonne arrived first in this set, with Yvette following just three minutes behind.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Yvonne remained there until age four, when the family moved to Hampton, Virginia. At age five, she enrolled in kindergarten at R.R. Moton Elementary School. From there, she attended Phoebus Elementary School and then Y. H. Thomas Elementary School, when the family moved to Washington Street in downtown Hampton, Virginia. She attended Benjamin Syms Middle School and Pembroke High School as a teenager. She completed her senior year by graduating from Ferguson High School in Newport News, Virginia, in 1978. (Our parents moved to Newport News.) She, her twin, and her sister, Mary, were featured in the school’s newspaper, as they were from a large family and graduated the same year!
Yvonne’s early education emerged under segregated terms. In 1968, she and her school-aged siblings attended four schools due to desegregation. Life was never easy at home or school, but Yvonne’s carefree spirit made her a joy. During those years, students had physical fitness tests. Yvonne enjoyed running, and yes, she always beat Yvette!
As a teenager, Yvonne accepted the Lord as her Savior. She also enjoyed her church family and grew in learning the Word of God. She last served at Spirit and Truth Church in Hampton, enjoying church services. Yvonne memorized many scriptures. One particular one was, “Owe no man anything but to love one another…” Romans 13:8.
While in high school, she met the love of her life, Hamilton Douglas, III, and soon married upon graduation. They remained married for 45 years and had the joy of four children: Yvonne, Cheryl, Yvette, and Hamilton, IV.
Proceeding her in death were her two beautiful baby girls, Cheryl and Yvette Douglas; her parents, Thomas & Harriette Todd; her brothers, Thomas, Michael, and Wilbert Todd; her sister, Ruth Todd Binns; and brothers-in-law Darryl M. Williams and Silas O. Binns, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Hamilton R. Douglas, III; her daughter, Yvonne Douglas Kandolo, and son, Hamilton R. Douglas, IV; grandchildren: Fantaza Dudley (Eben); Davonne and Ashley Douglas of Houston, Texas; Ntumba Kandolo; and Craig Gordon, Jr.; one great-granddaughter, Amara Dudley; and her mother-in-law, Eleanor Dandy. Yvonne’s cherished siblings include her twin Yvette Todd Vann (Bruce); Cheryl T. Collier (Cecil); Ronald A. Todd; Mary Todd Williams; Timothy J. Todd (Barbara); Bradford and Bradley Todd; three sisters-in-laws Sandra Morrison Todd and Karen Lewis Todd, Patricia Douglas; and two brother-in-laws, Jeffrey Parker and William David Parker; along with a host of nieces and nephews, and cousins by the dozen!
In early married life, she was a stay-at-home mom. However, losing two infants proved mentally and emotionally challenging, and she struggled to press on in life. She found joy when and where she could while giving out scriptures, the gift of talking, and little that she had. She believed in giving to God; if you hung around her for any time, she would encourage you to share your tithes and offerings with God. She enjoyed cleaning and straightening up – this included organizing others’ spaces. Indeed, she had a kind and giving heart.
Yvonne’s last tour of duty ended on October 16, 2023, at Inova Fairfax Medical Center in Falls Church, Virginia. There, she grew tired and was ready to see her Heavenly Father. She is now at peace in the presence of God and His angels.
Yvonne Todd Douglas, farewell to our beautiful family butterfly! We’re so glad we had this time together!
