Douglas Everett Storeby, "Storbo" passed away on Wednesday August 14, 2024 from Diabetes complications. He was 75 years old. He had his daughter McKenzie and her husband Justin Balver with him as well as his longtime Fiancée and caregiver Cindy Huddleston along with his "brother, not by blood but by God's blessings", Mark Lopez and his wife Karen from Arroyo Grande.
He was born on February 7, 1949 at the Coalinga District Hospital. He is the son of Clayton Everett Storeby and Maxine Patty MacFarlane. He attended Reef-Sunset Union Elementary and Avenal High School. His maternal grandparents were instrumental founders of the City of Avenal. Starting up diners, stores, lodging and a Fire Station for oil workers there. He graduated with the class of 1967 and was proud to be a Avenal High Buccaneer. He would spearhead class reunions at the Hanford Fraternal Hall which were always amazing and fun to attend. Doug made many lifelong friends growing up in Avenal and they all have remained close and in touch with each other to this day.
He was a Board Member of the Hanford Fraternal Hall and bartended many, many events there. He had his spot at the bar corner where he would entertain people with jokes and stories. He started celebrating his birthdays with "Birthday Bashes" there every 5 years starting at age 50. First party was at the Trinity Hall in Lemoore and the rest were held at the Hanford Fraternal Hall with catered meals. He would have friends come with their respective bands to play great music and showcase their talents. Many fun times had, and memories made at these parties. Sadly, his declining health prevented these celebrations for his 70- and 75-year birthdays.
Doug loved riding motorcycles. He was a dirt track bike racer for many years, traveling the circuit in the Central Valley area racing dirt bikes. He turned pro for a short time riding as 28K.
He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson with his "Tres Amigos" and other riders. Going on motorcycle runs throughout California and Nevada.
He did Enduro racing at Kings Speedway in his Chevrolet #5. He always had his car looking its best before each race. Once, he painted his car white on one side and black on the other. So, after each turn, he would be a different color. Drove the lap counters crazy trying to keep track of him.
Doug also loved, loved music. Wherever he was, he wanted music. He was a member of the Hanford Elks Lodge. While there, he would order his drink then head to the Jukebox to liven the place up with some music. He would do the same at his favorite hangout, Spirits Lounge. Always at the Jukebox making selections.
Doug worked for the City of Hanford as a Construction Inspector for 27 years, retiring in 2007. Upon retiring, he started West Coast Land Surveying and worked as a Land Surveyor fulltime until his health no longer let him. He made many, many friends throughout his life. If you got to know Doug, which was easy to do, you would never forget him. He was a strong lifeforce with a personality that lit up a room. The world has truly lost "a one of kind guy".
He was predeceased by his parents Clayton "Stub" Storeby (Pauline) and Max Legg. His sister Marlene Berglund and Uncle "Corky" MacFarlane.
He is survived by his Fiancée Cindy Huddleston, daughter McKenzie Balver (Justin), grandsons Kason and Kash Balver of Lemoore, cousins Lynne Kampa (Tim), Lisa Thomas (Rick) of Hanford, Scott MacFarlane and Aunt Edith MacFarlane of Lemoore, niece Marty Oliver (Dean), and many close friends he considered family.
A special Thank You to Mark Rodriguez. He was there through it all; a Guardian and Warrior Angel for Doug.
Remembrances can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
