Ed was born in Hanford, CA the son of Franklin and Cecile Potter. He attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High and Hanford High School, where he played basketball and football. Summers were spent working at Superior Dairy.
Nineteen fifty-six was an important year, as he married Sally Griswold, his high school sweetheart. He then received his Associates Degree at College of the Sequoias and began teaching in Fresno. He later continued in school, receiving his B.A. and M.A. from Fresno State University.
The next move was to Bruella School in Lodi, where Ed was the 7th and 8th grade teacher, the principal, the superintendent, and the bus driver!
Ed continued his education in a summer program at USC, receiving his doctorate in 1974. Subsequently, he relocated to Palmdale, becoming Superintendent of the Keppel School District.
Ed later earned a real estate license and real estate brokers license, and ran Blue Ribbon Real Estate. After retirement, he and wife Sally built a house in Bear Valley Springs. They enjoyed many happy years in their mountain home and later relocated to Los Osos in 2013 to be closer to family.
Ed was always volunteering. First, he dedicated eight years of service in the U.S. Army Reserve. Additionally, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lodi, the Scottish Rite in Stockton, and the Kiwanis Club in Littlerock. In Lodi, he helped with Little League and Indian Guides. He was a volunteer police officer in Palmdale, doing ride-alongs and working with stolen items and pawn shops. In Bear Valley Springs, he was a Community Emergency Response Team member. Finally, returning to his teaching roots, he was a math tutor at Del Mar Elementary in Morro Bay.
For fun, he traveled to 48 states, Europe, and China. He enjoyed trading stocks, taking walks, watching 49er games and NASCAR races. He especially loved his family and had great pride in their many and varied accomplishments.
