February 17, 1941 – May 19, 2018
It is with our deepest respect that we announce the passing of our beloved mentor, our most valuable asset “Captain” Gene Richie Bassett.
Gene was called to reunite with his loved ones in heaven Saturday, May 19, 2018. He is now in the arms of his dearly beloved wife Donna Jean Bassett. The Bassett’s had been married since May 28, 1981. Gene and Donna shared 34 beautiful years of matrimony. They were a great example of a real husband and wife that stood by each other’s side on good days and stood even closer on bad days no matter what.
At the time of his passing Mr. Bassett was surrounded at home by those who loved and cared for him, his dear children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children; Tina Jimenez, Kim Riso, Tracy Phelps, Shawn Phelps, Lori Bassett and Stacy & Bernard Hicks all of Hanford. He has several grand and great-grandchildren.
He entered the world February 17, 1941 born to Donald and Winona Bassett of Armona, CA. He is greeted in paradise by his parents Donald and Winona and brothers whom have went before him. Included in this heavenly reunion are his daughter Gina and his dearest wife Donna Jean.
Mr. Bassett was a great man who enjoyed being and working outdoors. Gene felt very proud to serve and provide for the community where he lived his entire life.
Gene graduated from Hanford High School in 1959. Gene attended Bakersfield College. In the late summer of 1966 he decided to join the Kings County Fire Department. He achieved many lifetime friendships and gained many experiences. These moments in action were fulfilled with other brave likeminded individuals whom would become more like his brothers over time.
In 1977 he achieved a new title with the department, Fire Captain. During his 31 years of service, hard work and perseverance, protecting his community as a member of the Kings Fire Department was the most awarding and prideful accomplishment in the many decades of adventures and experiences Mr. Bassett encountered.
Gene contributed to our community future more as Produce Farmer. He spent many seasons growing corn and other fresh vegetables which were sold at Hanford Farmer's Markets in the 90’s. Alongside his brother Bob, the two managed their family farm just outside of Grangeville and 14th Avenues. Gene also had a home garden. Growing delish and healthy vegetables provided many joyful diligent hours and countless memories that he and Donna would come to relish. They once grew a beautiful palm tree in the front yard of their family home. Several years later that tree was bought by Disneyland when that corporation began their quest to create the California Adventure theme park.
Gene Bassett was a great man with endless strength and confidence. He had such a hardworking spirit. When the time came that his other truck was no longer a fire truck Gene began to search for another opportunity. Not one to just sit about Bassett began a new career with Netto Agriculture. For over 9 years Gene drove equipment season after season putting in long hours and working alongside others whom were half his age.
The sport of golf intrigued Gene by way of either physical performance or catching a round on TV he was entertained by the game. Being the hands on creative type Gene also found time to take up wood working activities. He created many festive multi piece wood works, including wind chimes and windmills.
Gene also enjoyed vacation and time with family. In the decades of his marriage to Donna together the two traveled and explored. Gearing up the R.V. the pair would voyage out on the open road. Adventuring up North to visit relatives was a usual. Taking the motorhome out for a three-day weekend celebration was utilized every chance.
Gene knew that spending time with family was precious. He was complete in his life and had worked diligently for his accomplishments. He rejoiced in memories and surrounded himself with loved ones.
Gene had become injured during a home improvement project several years ago however he was not one to sit idling. With determination and care and the ever devotion in companionship of his beloved wife Donna Jean, Mr. Bassett was able to recover and continue to live happily with his love faithful by his side.
Unfortunately ill health continued to plague him throughout his last years on earth and with the unexpected passing of Mrs. Bassett in 2015, Gene began to acknowledge that his time for adventures and diligent duties where coming to a conclusion.
First in, last out was the motto of Gene’s life. He fought hard until his very last breath. His spirit was released from his worn out shell and is out now exploring the universe along his favorite shining star.
