John did many jobs in his lifetime, from a Factory Machinist to the Head Electrician at the State Hospital, but none he was more proud of than his service in the United States Navy where he served for 15 years before being honorably medically discharged with Desert Storm Syndrome. During his time in the Navy, John received a National Defense Service medal, a Southwest Asia service medal with 2 bronze stars, a Navy unit commendation, a Navy Achievement medal, and 4 good conduct medals for his service in Kuwait.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Charles, and his youngest daughter, Anita Charles—a loss that truly broke his heart.
John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan Mary Charles; his daughters Teresa Souza (and husband Louie) and Julie Calderon (and husband Michael); his six grandchildren John, Max, Dalton, Mason, Everett, and Titus; his brother Anthony, his wife Sharon, and their children Kristen and David; and his brother-in-law Fredrick Vears.
We will be celebrating the life of John on September 5, 2026 at the Riverdale Memorial Hall (3085 W Mt. Whitney Ave, Riverdale, CA 93656) at 12:00pm. This celebration is for friends and family to gather and share memories and enjoy a meal. We will be providing the main dish, and all guests are requested to provide any and all additions to this meal potluck style. All additions are greatly appreciated by the family but not required; all family and friends of John are welcome to come and help celebrate this wonderful man.
