Coach Hunter was an amazing PE teacher. He not only taught us sportsmanship, but profound advice to us Drew students. I wouldn’t realize how much this staff went above and beyond until I became a teacher myself. He always encouraged and praised us.

To me, he will always be Coach Hunter! He helped show me what I was capable of on a basketball court, as an individual, and as part of a team (we were City Champs in 1978).  He encouraged me when, a year later, my father died. I will always honor, respect, and love Coach.

I will always remember Coach John Hunter with a smile.  He was a loving family person, an excellent teacher, and a great friend.  He was very creative and loved to read. He always had a book  or a newspaper,  or something to read in his pocket.  His vocabulary and how he used words were outstanding!  He always had a story to tell and he told them in a most colorful way.  We shall never forget him.
My family and I send our deepest sympathy to his family and Friends.

Extending my heartfelt sympathy and condolences the John and Angela on the loss of their dearly beloved father. I remember Coach Hunter from Pulaski Middle School back in 1974 with the large fro. He did not take any flack from the students. Rest in paradise Coach.

My Waite street family ❤️, all the memories I have of going to your house growing up and to end up working with your father and Drew Elementary school is priceless.  “Coach” as he was called always had us laughing and on our toes when it came to how we were suppose to do things over on the “East side”.

I have known John Hunter for over 40 years. He was a great and loyal family man who was truly funny, witty and extremely talented. John will be remembered as a  dedicated teacher but most of all my cherished friend. We taught together, wrote plays together, went to ball games together, and held long phone discussions and conversations on current affairs, sports and all sort of topics.  If you knew Coach there would be a whole lot of laughter involved. 

Joyce Singleton, Coach and I were called the (Three Amigo’s) for those who knew us we were respected educators, human beings bonded by love.  We created wonderful Christmas programs and music programs for the children and community at Drew Elementary school in Gary, Indiana. John wrote the plays and provided the art and scenery, I wrote the words and music and Joyce directed the plays. There were plenty of antics involved in the background of putting these together. One of which I can relate. We sat in the back room of the library discussing plans for that years Christmas play. We thought that using a smoke bomb as part of the action would be a good idea. We decided to check this idea out right then. We set off the smoke bomb and it came to us that this was a bad idea when the school’s fire alarm went off and the fire truck came up the street from the fire station on the corner! We stayed in the back room and no one ever discovered what had happened! We did many projects with the students together in those days. John will be sorely missed.


Coach Hunter was the best! He kept me in shape as long as I was in his gym class lol! He  was so cool to me as a kid! He was a team player and he cared so much about all of us! I’m happy to have gotten a chance to learn from him! He’ll be missed but also remembered in the best way!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad.  Coach Hunter was a good person and always had a smile on his face. He was my coach at Pulaski and teased me of my name because his daughter and I shared the same name, Angela.

Coach Hunter was one of the greatest coaches and gym teacher. I remember when the coach went and found a picture of me from a Christmas play I was in to show my daughter who attended Drew School years later. You will truly be missed. Your Family have my condolences.    Rosanna Carson

My Condolences to the family of Coach Hunter. Coach Hunter coached the boys Pulaski Middle School to the Gary city Championship. This was year 1977-1978 school year. As a player on this elite championship team, coach Hunter was a great strategist , leader, and motivator who enjoyed working with young people. Mr. Hunter was Also a Beacon of light in the community and he will be truly missed.

Coach Hunter was one of the best gym coaches ever. I thoroughly enjoyed his class. It was also nice to have him helping Mrs. Singleton and Mr. Foster with the drama plays and productions. He was a great role model of teaching with excellence and building knowledge in the next generation in fun ways.
