Mamie grew up in Oklahoma and Texas with her 3 brothers and 5 sisters. She attended school and was also home schooled by her mother. Mamie helped with all the younger children and worked in the fields. In 1942, she moved with her family to Hanford, California. She was 20 years of age. She went to work in town at the defense plant and at Peter Pan restaurant. In 1944, she married Ed Shores, and they had a son, Wayne, who passed away in 1945. Mamie and Ed never had any more children but they became foster parents to several children. They were also very active in their nieces’ and nephews’ lives. After living in Hanford for part of her married life, Mamie and Ed moved to Oregon where they could hunt and fish and enjoy the outdoors. Mamie also did gardening, canning, quilting and crafts. When Mamie’s husband died in 1995, she remained in her home in Oregon for several more years, but in 2004, she and her sister, Betty, moved back to Hanford where they could be close to family.
Mamie was preceded in death by her parents, Elsberry and Cora Hayes; husband, Ed Shores; brothers, Virgil, Raymond and Chester and sisters, Allie, Bessie and Betty. She is survived by her sisters, Alice Leach and Eunice Soares Newquist both of Hanford and by many loving nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at the Grangeville Cemetery; 10428 14th Avenue, Armona, CA 93202.
