

He grew up as a country boy, working on the family farm and was active in 4 - H. Graduated from Excelsior School and Hanford High School in 1955, where he played trumpet in the band. He attended Fresno State for one year, joined the army 1956-1958, stationed in Germany as a medic, later touring with the band playing trumpet. His reserve duty ended in 1962.
Back from the army, he enrolled at Fresno State, putting himself through school, working on the dairy farm. He was a life member of the dairy club. As a senior in 1960, he enrolled in agribusiness, the first of its kind offered by any college or university in the us. He graduated in 1961 with an agri-business major and a BS in dairy husbandry. After graduation he worked as a dispatcher for Topper Feed Mills in Fresno.
He married his wife, Joy, in October 1961 and from humble beginnings, their journey last for 63 years. They raised two daughters, Melanie and Kristi. The days were long and he worked hard as he began his career as a soil fumigation salesman and applicator for Neil A Maclean Co., Inc. In El Monte, CA in 1963 and later in Lodi, CA in 1968. Returned to Hanford in 1970 working for Peoples Ditch Co. Hired by Tri-Cal., Inc in 1972 - 1999 as a salesman/office manager in Goshen, CA. Later a consultant until his passing. Never afraid to knock on doors, and with the help of fellow workers, the Goshen office had record sales.
He was a mentor to many and highly respected throughout California. Well known for his knowledge, honesty and pride in doing his best and never being late for a job. His growers were his friends. His interests were many: patriotism, politics, western movies, antiquing, showing old tractors, traveling and camping with his family. He was generous, sharing his large garden with family and friends.
For many years, he and the family sold apricots-u-pick, farming walnuts later. Known as "Watermelon Bob," he grew a variety of melons for the Farmer's Market throughout the valley. From 1995-2023 he sold exclusive at the Visalia Farmer's Market with the help of daughter, Kristi, grandchildren Brennan and Natalie. He was a swine 4 - H leader, active member of the Hanford FFA Parent Club, Jolly Bunch Dance Club and the Early Day Gas, Engine and Tractor Assn. - Branch 8.
He had a special relationship with his daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren and his brother Gary. Close to his grandchildren, he was a role model and emphasized the value of education. His neighbors were his friends: The Miya Family, Toby and Sharon Junell, Rick and Joyce Cody. His "adopted sons" were Johnny Marroquin, Ronnie Reyes, Robert and Luis Jimenez.
His love of animals was endless and his presence is missed by his loyal companion, King. Bob left and extraordinary legacy, loved by many and will forever be remembered by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Joy Montgomery, his children Melanie Mattos (Richard D.), Kristi Elszy (William) and his grandchildren Brennan and Natalie Elszy. His brother Gary, two sister-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Elbert and Laura Montgomery.
Graveside Services will be Thursday, February 13th at 10:00 a.m. at the Kings River Cemetery.
