On August 24, 2016, a great sadness fell onto us. For on this day we lost the great lady of our family. Treva Mae Hurt, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother left us to join the love of her life, John, to whom she was united in marriage on August 19, 1944, in Hanford, CA. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2016. Together again, they now journey eternally hand-in-hand just as they did during seventy-one years of marriage. Treva leaves behind her heart broken and grieving son John C. (Chris), Jr. and daughter Linda. With the warmth of loving embraces and gentle pecks on the cheek she greeted every family member and friend. These loving gestures will be dearly missed by son-in-law Ronald; grandsons Robert, John C. (Chris) III, William, and David; great- grandchildren Amanda, Adrian, Erin, and John C (J.C.) IV; and brother-in-law Kenneth and his wife, Dona. She loved them all: How much more blessed can a person be?
The second youngest in a family of twelve brothers and sister, Treva was born in Sparta, MO. While still very young she and her family moved to Earlimart, CA. She was soon noticed by the boy next door, John. He fondly remembered her as the “sweet, brown-haired girl with the lovely smile who played in the school band.” Whenever Treva needed some help on a project, she would not ask a brother, she would go next door to see John. Although he was a little older a romance took root and they dated through their school years.
After graduating from high school she waited for John while he was serving his country as a B-26 bomber pilot flying missions over war- torn Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Treva fulfilled her dreams about that boy next door and gave him her hand and heart in marriage. Chris and Linda came along within the next couple of years and became John and Treva’s realization of closely held dreams and hopes. The consummate mother and homemaker, Treva accompanied John to each of his air force assignments or patiently awaited his return from duties in foreign lands.
John was ultimately assigned to Mather AFB, where he retired in 1970 after a distinguished 28-year military career. The couple lived Sacramento until spring 2015 when they moved to Hanford, CA.
Treva loved all things in nature and cherished each moment in the flower gardens so lovingly created by John. Her backyard was always awash with the colors of the rainbow provided by azaleas, amaryllises, cherry trees, blackberry bushes, and a manicured green lawn. A dominant persimmon tree in the front yard provided a bountiful supply of fruit for Treva’s succulent persimmon cookies. Her love of beauty drew not only God’s creatures, but also family, friends and even passersby to her front door. Each knew that the beauty of her home exemplified the beauty of her heart and soul.
Chris and Linda will receive family and friends for the Visitation on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, from 8:30-10:00 A.M. with the Funeral Service following at 10:30 A.M, all being held at People’s Funeral Chapel, 501 North Douty Street, Hanford, CA. Treva will be laid to rest with John at Bakersfield National Cemetery on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, following a short service beginning at 10:45 A.M.
