Winnie Enloe Furrer, lovingly known as Grandma Tutu, lived a remarkable 98 years filled with adventure, laughter, friendship, and love. Born on August 7, 1928, in El Centro, California, Winnie lived life on her own terms, embracing the world with a spirit of adventure and a heart that treasured the people around her.
Grandma Tutu was never one to sit still for long. She loved to travel, hike, backpack, whitewater raft, and ski. Whether exploring new places or enjoying the beauty of the outdoors, she had a passion for life that kept her seeking new adventures. She found joy in experiences, in the friendships she built along the way, and most of all, in the time she spent with family and friends.
One of the things that made Grandma Tutu so unforgettable was her love of storytelling. She always had a story to share, and some were so extraordinary that you couldn't help but wonder just how much of them you could believe. Her stories brought laughter, sparked curiosity, and gave those around her memories they would carry for years to come. That was part of her magic—she knew how to make life interesting and leave people with something to talk about long after the story ended.
To her family, she was more than a grandmother. She was a cherished part of their lives, a connection between generations, and a woman whose adventurous spirit and unforgettable personality will continue to live on through those who loved her. The memories she created, the stories she told, and the love she shared will remain a lasting part of her family's legacy.
Winnie was preceded in death by her two beloved children, Lewis Furrer who passed away March 1997 and Theresa Mortensen, who passed away October 1998. Though she endured the unimaginable heartbreak of losing both of her children, their place in her life and in her family's story will always remain. They are forever a part of the love, memories and legacy that live on through the generation of their family.
Winnie is lovingly remembered by her two granddaughters, Heather Rider (Dave Rider) and Danielle Gonzales (Justin Gonzales); her great-grandchildren, Skyler Mortensen, Bryce Guevara, Jake Gonzales, Chase Guevara & Gavin Gonzales; and her great-great-grandchildren, Taytum Mortensen, Ryder Mortensen, and Steven Guevara.
Though saying goodbye is never easy, Grandma Tutu leaves behind a lifetime of memories, countless stories, and a legacy of living boldly, loving deeply, and finding adventure wherever life leads. Her presence will be missed more than words can express, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of the family and friends who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Ninety-eight years is a remarkable journey, and Grandma Tutu certainly made hers and unforgettable one. May she be remembered with smiles, laughter, and stories of her own—some perhaps too extraordinary to believe.
Rest peacefully, Grandma Tutu. Your adventures may have come to an end, but your stories will live on forever. You will always be loved, always be remembered, and never be forgotten.
