Atty. Robert W. Kelley

Atty. Robert W. Kelley, 71, of Hanover died Thursday, January 17, 2002 in the South Shore in Weymouth after a short illness. The son of the late James and Sarah McManus Kelley, he was born in Boston on February 19, 1930. He was raised and educated in Boston and was a 1947 graduated of Boston English High School. Mr. Kelley served in the Army during the Korean War. He graduated in 1956 from the University of CT and in 1962 from Suffolk University Law School. He was a resident of Jamaica Plain before moving to Hanover in 1962. Atty Kelley was admitted to the Bar in 1962 and began his Legal Career as a Public Defender, when Bristol and Plymouth Counties were beginning their Public Defender Offices. He was a partner in the Brockton Law Firm of Kelley and Reddington from 1974 until 1995, when he joined his son at the Braintree Firm of Kelley and Kelley. He was a pioneer in the Battered Woman's Syndrome Defense and had received the Judge Alan Hale Award for Distinguished Service. Mr. Kelley was admitted to practice before the Federal District Court and the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of the Mass Bar Association, the Boston Bar Association, the Plymouth County Bar Association and was a High Profile Trial Attorney. Mr. Kelley was an avid Skier, a prolific reader and enjoyed traveling. He was a member of the Mass Academy of Trail Lawyers, a member of the Wig and Robe Society and founding member of the Slope Knollers Ski Club. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Barry Kelley, a son Atty. Robert E. Kelley of Milton, 4 daughters, Sara J. Finocchiaro of Duxbury, Andrea W. Harding of Lexington, Paula M. McNamara of Ridgefield CT and Katherine E. Detmer of San Antonio TX, a brother, James Kelley of So. Boston and 9 grandchildren. Funeral Mass on Monday, January 21, 2002 at 11 AM in St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover Street, Rte 139 in Hanover. Internment in Hanover Center Cemetery. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Rte 53 in Hanover on Saturday AND Sunday 2-8 PM.
