Edward V. Casey “Ed”, 83, Attorney in Hanson, died peacefully Sunday, August 11th surrounded by his loved ones. Ed leaves behind his beloved wife, Linda (Clark) Casey, loving step-daughter Tracy (Gillette) Sheehan and her husband Craig of Marshfield and treasured granddaughters Siena and Ruby. Ed also leaves his nephew Michael Casey and nieces Meghan Baker, Amy Adler and Ellen (Quits) Casey, the children of his late brother Kevin Casey and sister in law Barbara.
Born in Worcester in 1940 to the late Edward Vincent and Violet L. H. (Ambruson) Casey, Ed graduated from St. John's High School, received his B.A. in Economics from Holy Cross College and his LLB Law Degree from Boston College Law School. He passed the Massachusetts Bar Exam in 1965.
Ed's practice concentrated in Real Estate Law. He was a Title Officer at Chicago Title Insurance Company, before starting his own Real Estate Law practice specializing in Title Examinations. A former member of the Title Standards Committee for the MCA and Land Court Examiner, he was frequently sought to testify as an expert witness in numerous legal proceedings. Ed also volunteered his time to the Town of Hanson as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and as Water Commissioner.
Known as someone who had answers, gladly sharing his knowledge and helping friends and strangers alike, usually refusing payment, instead quoting Benjamin Franklin, by saying "We either hang together or we will certainly hang separately.” As a result, it became commonplace for friends and acquaintances to try to find the "best cigar Ed ever smoked.” It is unknown which was greater, his love of dogs or his love of cigars but the combination of cigar smoke and dog scent created an aroma that, all who knew him, will remember forever.
Ed will always be remembered for his witticisms, his master of words and his sense of humor. No one and no subject was spared.
When standing before a mausoleum wall, the funeral director asked Ed which vault he thought his father would want. Ed immediately said "I would take Paul Lynde to block" (older readers will get that one).
When he and Linda would go out to dinner, as they did most nights, Ed would unfailingly tell the hostess to "watch out for this one, she's been a Bit.... all day", Linda, being used to it, would just roll her eyes and smile.
When his step daughter, Tracy, went off to college, he wrote faithfully twice weekly, always ending with "Write Home". Included with the letters would be a picture of a stranger holding a sign saying "Write Home". Ed had anyone who came to the house or office (the oilman, mailman, clients, delivery persons, Jehovah Witness' etc.) hold the sign for a picture. He knew how to make light of any situation and that continued until his final days.
What many never knew was deep sensitivity for those in need or pain, always trying to help and usually anonymously. If asked his favorite song, without pause he would say "Lady in Red", it captured his love for his wife of thirty six years. Every Thanksgiving Dinner, when it was his turn to say what he was grateful for, he would look at Linda and say, "You". He would then point to Tracy and his grandchildren and say "Without you, I would not have them". But what his family will forever be thankful for, is that we had HIM.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care that Ed received at the Bay Path Rehabilitation in Duxbury. The Nurses, Physical Therapists, Staff, Food Servers . . . Everyone gave such tender and expert care. We thank you for making Ed feel safe and loved in his final months with us.
The family will be arranging a celebration of Ed's life at a later date.
