Edward Joseph Geswell Jr., 78, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. A pillar of the Hanover community for five decades, Ed, as he was known to friends and family, built a legacy of service, entrepreneurship, and dedication to his craft.
Born and raised in Watertown to the late Edward J. Geswell Sr. and Mary C. Geswell, Ed pursued excellence in education, graduating from North Cambridge Catholic before earning his bachelor's degree from Boston College and later his master's degree from Suffolk University. His commitment to public service was marked early in his career when he served as a Sergeant in the National Guard and worked as a Call Firefighter with Engine Co. 1 in North Hanover.
A master plumber by trade, Ed was the founder of EJ Geswell Plumbing and Heating Inc., where he established a reputation for exceptional workmanship and integrity. His expertise and leadership in his field led him to serve as Secretary/Treasurer of the South Shore Plumbing and Gas Inspectors Association for many years. Ed also taught the next generation of plumbers at South Shore Regional Vocational Technical High School night school for many years. The Town of Norwell benefited from his knowledge and dedication during his distinguished thirty-year tenure as their plumbing and gas inspector. Together with his son, he expanded his business ventures as President and owner of Pilgrim Propane, creating a lasting family enterprise.
Ed's greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife Kathleen of 54 years, with whom he built a beautiful life filled with love and devotion. He was the proud father of Edward J. Geswell III and his wife Jennifer of Hanover, and Janice Goyette and her husband Todd of Millbury. His legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Edward J. Geswell IV and his fiancée Amanda Schell, Abigail Goyette, Rebecca Goyette, Jillian Geswell, and Declan Geswell. He was predeceased by his loving sister Carol Ann McAuliffe and leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will miss their uncle dearly.
Ed's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his commitment to his profession, and his service to his community. His warmth, wisdom, and work ethic will be remembered by all who knew him.
