She spent the last seven months of her life at the Harbor House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hingham, where she made many friends and was well-cared for.
She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Wood) Rydings who immigrated from England in the 1920s. Eileen was preceded in death by brothers John and Joseph Rydings, sisters Kathleen Casey, Florence McCabe, and Theresa Hillen. She is survived by her sister Marie Mike of Cape Cod.
She is preceded in death by her husband Harold N. Laming and former husband John J. Wallace. Eileen has two daughters, Penny Hillstrom of Pembroke and husband Carl, and Victoria Poilucci and husband Joseph of Cary, North Carolina. She has cherished grandchildren Eric Hillstrom of Marshfield; Stephen Hillstrom of Rockwall, Texas; Sarah Phillips of Duxbury; Matthew Hillstrom of Plymouth; Andrew Hillstrom of Marshfield; Olivia Hillstrom of Pembroke; and Ashley Poillucci of Cary, North Carolina. Her great grandchildren are Lily Hillstrom, James Hillstrom, Paige Hillstrom, Charlotte Phillips, and Poppy Phillips.
Eileen spent her childhood years in Dorchester and later Quincy. She was educated in the Boston school system, graduating in the 1940s from Dorchester High School. She often spoke fondly of the memories there as a child. Eileen had a passion for her work in the food service industry. She absolutely loved greeting people in the early mornings while preparing and serving their breakfast. Her greatest career achievement was having the title of “head Hostess” at the former Valles Steak House. She continued to work in the food service until the age of 78.
In 1975, she moved to South Florida where she loved the weather, the sunshine, and all the wonderful people she met. She worked at the clock restaurant in Margate, where she made lasting friendships. In 1987, she moved back to Massachusetts to be close to her family and grandchildren. She made so many memories of holidays, summer vacations, birthdays, and summers in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
Eileen lived in Marshfield “Winslow Village” for more than 30 years and was the ambassador extraordinaire with her vivacious personality and signature “wave.” She would greet and say hello to everyone that would pass her by. Her greatest love was that for her children and grandchildren. She was endlessly proud of all of them. There was little time spent without her! She will be sadly missed. In the end, realizing she loved Our Lord and the Blessed Mother whom she referenced often brings me comfort.
Relatives and friends and kindly invited to attend Eileen’s Funeral Mass on June 13 at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church (St. Mary’s), 392 Hanover Street, Hanover. There is a celebration to follow immediately afterwards in the Parish Center.
