Eleanor Louise Murray passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on September 2, 2025, at the age of 75. Eleanor leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and faith that will carry on in the many lives she touched.
Eleanor was a consummate educator who believed deeply in the power of education. She received degrees from Girls Latin School, Emmanuel College, Boston College, Boston State College, and Schiller International University in Munich. These educational experiences led to a prestigious 36-year teaching career at Weymouth High School in the Department of Foreign Languages. Eleanor poured her brilliance, compassion, and love into every student that walked through her classroom door.
In addition to teaching, Eleanor lived her life committed to advocating for accessibility and inclusion of all people. This commitment was born out of her own experiences of contracting the polio virus at the age of five. While she had many decades of health and vitality, post-polio syndrome continually challenged her physical health. Despite these obstacles, she never lost her wit and wisdom. She always advocated a very clear message: vaccines save lives.
Eleanor treasured the deep bonds she had with her family. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents John Joseph Murray and Elizabeth Tierney Murray as well as her brother John and sister Joan. She will be lovingly remembered by her siblings Elizabeth of Duxbury, MA, Mary (Bruce Smith) of Brentwood, TN, Edmond (Cristi) of Sacramento, CA, Thomas (Laurie DiMaria) of Duxbury, MA, and Joseph (Michele) of Braintree MA, and sister-in-law Kathy of Brentwood, TN. A true source of joy in Eleanor’s life was her nieces, nephews and grandnephews: Katherine (William) Ratliff and their sons Thompson and Jack, John, Parker (Mauricio), Blaire, Megan (Patrick), Kristen (Okan), Emily, Jessica, Joseph, Heather, and Julia. Eleanor is also survived by many cousins, friends, and former students who cherished her dearly.
A private funeral mass was held in her honor, and a memorial celebration will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider donating to the Monastery of St. Clare, 590 Gay Street, Westwood, Ma. 02090.
