

Frances Florence (Barile) Bates of Braintree and Hanover, MA passed away on November 29, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Anthony and Anastasia “Elsie” (Lorusso) Barile. She was born in Boston on March 27, 1927 and lived in the North End until moving to Braintree as a young child.
She graduated from Braintree High School in 1944, and then went to work at the Naval Air Base in Boston. She often spoke of this time in her life as one of her happiest. Her mother was an officer of the Sons of Italy Braintree Lodge 1422, introducing Frances to a community that she would become a lifelong member of.
Frances married her soulmate, the late Henry F. Bates in 1948. In 1960, they moved with their children to Hanover, MA and remained there for many years. Frances became well-known as the “Neighborhood Mom” to the children on their street. She welcomed one and all to her kitchen and made everyone who came into contact with her feel cared for. She shone brightest when she was traveling with her husband, enjoying the Florida beaches, or spending time with her family or her lifelong friends, Lucy Hession and Paula Seggelin of Braintree, MA. Her zest for life was contagious.
She is survived by her children William F. Bates and his wife Kathy of Randolph, MA, Robert F. Bates and his partner Barbara Donovan of Attleboro, MA, Garry F. Bates of Georgia, VT, Susan Bates Clancy and her partner Timothy McManus of Hanson, MA, Janice Bates-Marshall of Carver, MA and the late Stephen Bates of Braintree, MA. She is remembered as a present and loving grandmother to Jason Bates of Roxbury, MA, Toby Bates of Brookline, MA, Alison Clancy of San Diego, CA, Graham Clancy of Bridgewater, MA, Dylan Marshall of Brighton, MA, and Natalie Marshall of Carver, MA. She is the great-grandmother to Genevieve Lai-Bates of Brookline, MA.
Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St. Rte. 53, Hanover, on Tuesday, December 4th 4-7pm. Funeral home service will be held on Wednesday at 10am followed by a burial in Hanover Center Cemetery.
