
James Murdock Gratto, 92, of Quincy died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in the Norwell Knoll Nursing Home after a short illness. The son of the late Melville and Mary A. 0'Donnell Gratto, he was born in Machias ME on December 18, 1909. He was a 1927 Graduate of South Portland ME High School and attended the Maine School of Accounting and Finance. Mr. Gratto was employed by the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions and retired as a Regional Director in 1972 after 38 years, having served in Boston and San Francisco. He lived in Arlington many years and lived in Seminole FL for 20 years after his retirement. Mr. Gratto and his wife returned to the area in 1992 first living in Rockland and moving to Quincy in 1997. During WWII, Mr. Gratto served with the Maritime Commission. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, having served as State Warden in the 1930's, Grand Knight of the Cheverus Council, a Member of the Sebastian Rale Assembly 4th Degree and a Member of the Largo FL Council #4892 of the Knights of Columbus. After his retirement and while living in Florida, Mr. Gratto served as President of the Largo-Seminole Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Director of the Bay Gulf Federal Credit Union in Tampa, Director of the Oakhurst Groves Homeowners Association in Seminole and Director of the Greater Seminole Community Council. He also served as a Director of the Ellis Paperboard Products Inc. of Portland ME. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary I. O'Connor Gratto, a son, Edward Gratto of Norwell, 2 daughters, Mary Stagno of Hanover and Kathleen Platzman of Atlanta GA, 2 brothers, George Gratto and Edward Gratto, both of South Portland ME and 7 Grandchildren. He was the Father of the late James T. Gratto. Funeral Mass on Saturday, June 15, 2002 at 9 AM in the Holy Cross Church in South Portland ME. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in South Portland. Visiting Hours on Friday from 4-7 PM in the Conroy-Tully South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1115 West Chestnut Street, Brockton, MA 02301. Local Arrangements are by the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Rte 53 in Hanover.
