December 12, 1936 – May 17, 2025
James Quinn Lyons Jr., formerly of Halifax, passed away peacefully on May 17th. He was 88.
Jim was born in Boston on December 12, 1936 to the late Mary Helen (James) and James Quinn Lyons, and spent his childhood in Woods Hole. He loved sailing back and forth in Little Harbor with his cousin and friends, learning the basics of sailing. Jim also spent considerable time watching the bustling activity at Sam Cahoon’s Fish Market, where the fishermen’s daily catch was loaded into trucks and delivered to Boston and Providence.
Jim attended Lawrence High School in Falmouth, where he enjoyed singing in the glee club and playing on the school’s football team. He spent summers serving as a lifeguard at Falmouth Heights Beach. After graduating from Lawrence High School in 1954, Jim served in the Marine Corps for four years. He was stationed as a Marine Security Guard at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, an experience that he often recalled with a deep sense of pride. Following his discharge, he studied transportation at Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana. He then spent a few years working in Wyoming and California before returning to Massachusetts.
In 1966, Jim met his wife, Eleanor, at a dance in Somerville. They eloped to Nantucket in 1967 and ultimately settled in Halifax, where they raised their family and spent their lives filled with laughter, a sense of adventure, and enduring love. Jim spent a fulfilling career at Hallamore Transportation in Holbrook, retiring in 2015 after more than 40 years of service.
A man of quiet strength and curiosity, Jim loved carpentry, sailing, cutting and splitting wood for his wood stove, maintaining his home, and reading military history. He was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of the Lake in Halifax and a member of the VFW Post 6258 in Halifax. Jim will be remembered for his kindness, his resilience, and the unwavering manner in which he approached life — with purpose, dignity, and commitment to his family.
Devoted husband of 50 years to the late Eleanor Faith Lyons (Savage). Cherished father to Abbie Lyons and her husband Daniel Lim of Plymouth, and Joseph Lyons of Plymouth and his partner Kristin. Cherished grandfather to Makenzie and Jake. Predeceased by his parents: Mary Helen (James) and James Quinn Lyons and his siblings: John Lyons and Mary Lyons.
The family sends grateful appreciation to the outstanding nurses and staff from Benchmark at Plymouth Crossing in Plymouth, as well as to the devoted care team from Cranberry Hospice, who helped oversee Jim’s care while he was on hospice.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, May 24 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Sullivan Funeral Homes, 2 Maquan St, at the corner of Rte 14 & 58 in Hanson.
