John Joseph Congdon III, 63, of Duxbury, MA, passed away peacefully at home on October 5, 2024, with his family by his side. John, known as Jack to his friends and family, was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, godfather, colleague, and friend to many.
Jack was born in Quincy, MA in February of 1961, to parents John and Mary Congdon. Raised alongside his four sisters in the tight-knit neighborhood of Houghs Neck in Quincy, Jack spent much of his childhood on the water, boating and waterskiing in Quincy Bay. His love for the ocean and love for his country compelled him to serve in the United States Navy. Jack served honorably from 1981 to 1985. Highlights from his service include deploying to Beirut in 1982 for the Lebanese civil war as part of the multi-national peacekeeping force and working as an air traffic controller aboard the USS Guam during the invasion of Grenada. Jack was proud of his service to his country and he often said his four years in the Navy was the best education he ever had.
Jack received his B.A. in Business from Curry College and spent the entirety of his 32-year professional career in management at United Parcel Service. Jack always approached work with a positive attitude and uplifted all around him. What he enjoyed most about his career at UPS were the relationships he built with his colleagues and the annual trips they would take to NASCAR races.
Jack had many passions in life. He often spent weekend mornings golfing at North Hill and afternoons at Duxbury Beach. He loved going to concerts and could sing every word to any Bruce Springsteen or Bob Seger song. He was a diehard Boston sports fan from birth, and an adopted Alabama Crimson Tide and Providence Friar fan through his sons.
Above all, Jack’s most important role in life was as a loving husband and father. His family was his everything. He met the love of his life, Mary Beth, when he was just 19 years old, and he was incredibly proud of the life they built together. He cherished the time he spent coaching his boys with Duxbury Youth sports, and despite the long hours he worked, he would never miss a game or school event. His commitment to his family knew no bounds. Family always came first for Jack.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Mary Beth (Dunne) Congdon, and their two sons, John (29) and Colin (24). He was the beloved brother of Debbie Congdon, Doreen Gaylord, Diane Prakop, and Jillann Bowman; and was the proud uncle of Erica, Leeann, Colleen, Bryan, Kyle, Joseph, Michael, and Courtney.
Jack’s generosity, kindness, loyalty, timely sense of humor, and infectious smile will be etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 11th from 4pm to 8pm at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St. (Route 53), Hanover, MA. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 12th at 10am at Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont St., Duxbury, MA, followed by burial in Mayflower Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the VA Boston Healthcare System (135), 940 Belmont St., Brockton, MA 02301.
