John P. Power

Mr. John P. "Beaver" Power, 79 of Pembroke died Monday, August 10, 2009 at home after an illness of several months. The son of the late James and Mary Kennedy Power, he was born on Mission Hill in Roxbury, "God's Country" as he always called it on August 9, 1930. Mr. Power was a graduate of Mission Church High School; he received a BA in Political Science from Providence College and Masters Degree in education plus 42 additional credits at Boston State College. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and was discharged as a Lieutenant. Mr. Power had been employed as a Teacher and Coach for the City of Boston. He was a Social Studies and English Teacher at West Roxbury High, South Boston High, Xaverian Brothers High and Catholic Memorial High School, where he was also a Varsity Basketball, Baseball and Soccer Coach. Mr. Power was a member of the Boston Teacher Association, he loved life, teaching and was an avid golfer and loved swimming. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary M. Cradock Power, 4 sons, John P. Power Jr. of Salem NH, Michael J. Power of West Roxbury, Brian F. Power of Scituate and James C. Power of Mt. Pleasant NC, 3 daughters, Patricia P. Donovan of Bethel ME, Christine M. Straughn of Cohasset and Suzanne Garofalo of Hull, 1 brother, Edward Power of Boston, 1 sister, Carolyn Power of Palmer, 21 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William, James, Joseph and Mary Power. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St., Rte 53 in HANOVER on Wednesday from 4-8 PM. Funeral Mass on Thursday at 10 AM in St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover St., Rte 139 in Hanover. Interment will be private on Friday at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Due to the floral restrictions at the National Cemetery, memorial donations may be made to Mission Church, 1545 Tremont St. Boston MA 02120.
