

John was the beloved husband of Stella (Szafran) and his late wife Theresa (Connell) Rogers, loving father of John Rogers, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Plymouth, Michael Rogers and his wife Stephanie of Walpole and Nancy Cristoferi and her husband Tom of Freedom, NH. Dear brother of Betty Ann Ford of Weymouth. He was predeceased by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. John was the cherished grandfather of 6; Joe, Sam, Zack, Emily, Katie and Ryan and great grandfather of 6. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, nephews and friends.
John was proudly born and raised in South Boston and served in the United States Air Force, continued his service with the Massachusetts National Guard and completed his service as a reservist in the United States Air Force. John graduated from Suffolk University with a degree in Education. He continued his education at University of Massachusetts Amherst where he received a Doctorate degree in Education. He also graduated New England School of Law and received a Juris Doctorate. In 1965, John and his wife moved to Rockland to raise their family. John served as Superintendent of Schools in Rockland for 23 years and had the Rockland Junior High named after him, after the school received an award for excellence from the White House in 1975.
John was the force behind some of the biggest projects in his hometown of Rockland, including the rebuilding of the John W Rogers Middle school, renovation of the High School, the Rockland Senior Center and the Veterans Memorial.
John served on nearly every social and volunteer club in town including as a Rockland selectman, interim Rockland Town Administrator, board member of the South Shore Tri-Town Development Corp., president of Rockland Housing Authority, chairman of the Rockland School Building Committee, president of Rockland Kiwanis Club, member of the Rockland Lions, member of the Rockland Eagles and member of the Rockland Knights of Columbus. John had a real passion for the people of the community.
If people wanted something done in Rockland they called John, he knew how to get people motivated to the cause.
When not working on town projects John enjoyed spending time with his family, boating, golfing and skiing.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 5th from 3pm to 8pm at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 E. Water St. Rockland. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 9am at Holy Family Church, 403 Union St., Rockland. Burial will be private at a later date.
