Mary Ellen (Cunningham) Wetzel of Norwell passed away on September 27, 2026, at the age of 89, leaving behind a family who loved her deeply. They will forever miss her gift for uplifting others, her infectious laugh, and her unmistakable zest for life, especially when surrounded by family and friends, with plenty of conversation, a good game of cards, and perhaps a little Chardonnay.
Mary Ellen was born in Manhattan, N.Y. on December 4, 1936 to Daniel and Rita (O’Shea). She grew up with her parents and older sister Rita in Forest Hills Garden, Queens, N.Y. Mary Ellen graduated from Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Academy in 1954. She went on to study at Newton College of the Sacred Heart, graduating in 1958, and received her Master of Education from St. John’s University in 1959.
Mary Ellen is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years Paul Wetzel, her beloved children Marjorie (late Edward) Sarah (Peter) and Daniel (Jan), her adored grandchildren Christopher (Erica), Corinne, Katherine, Jessica, Peter, Allie and Caitlin, great-grandchildren Logan, Lena and many treasured relatives and friends.
Mary Ellen was pre-deceased by her dearly loved son Michael in 2024.
At the heart of Mary Ellen’s life was her 65-year marriage to Paul. Love and laughter sustained their relationship, but perhaps most of all, they simply enjoyed each other’s company. They were happiest just spending time together, especially at home in Norwell, where they lived for nearly half a century.
Being a mother was one of Mary Ellen’s greatest joys and deepest commitments. She took great pride in raising her four children, supported their individual interests and dreams, and filled their lives with love and encouragement. She cherished the family she and Paul built together, including being a grandmother and welcoming her grandchildren to her home for visits. The time they spent together created memories that remained dear to her throughout her life.
Mary Ellen was a devoted educator working as a 1st grade teacher in Levittown, N.Y. and for many years as a preschool teacher at The Steeple School in Marshfield, Mass. She was beloved enough that at least one student named their cat, “Mrs. Wetzel.” She later brought her caring nature to her work at the Attleboro Council on Aging before retiring to enjoy her gardens, family and friends.
An accomplished and creative gardener Mary Ellen’s happiest days were spent amongst her flowers with her only regret being that her pine tree filled yard and never long enough New England summers didn’t supply enough sunshine for all her horticultural dreams. She additionally loved days at the beach, traveling and reading voraciously.
A gracious welcoming hostess with a “more the merrier” attitude, Mary Ellen loved opening her home for holidays and celebrations with family and friends. The days and (often late) nights were full of Irish music, delicious food, stories, jokes and encouragement for another nightcap.
Mary Ellen was a great believer in the importance of civic and community engagement, with a passion for supporting her hometown. She volunteered for numerous organizations in the community, including the PTA, Meals on Wheels, James Library, and the Norwell Council on Aging.
The Wetzel family will be forever grateful to the extraordinary staff of Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center, who cared for Mary Ellen with love, compassion, and dignity for the last ten years of her life. They became more than her caregivers; they became part of our family. We will always be indebted to these angels on earth for the kindness they showed and for the love and support they gave our entire family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 15, 2026 at Our Lady of the Angels Parish (St. Mary’s Church), 392 Hanover St, Hanover, MA at 9:00 AM. Celebration of Life Luncheon at Disch’s Route 53 Tavern, 615 Washington St, Pembroke MA at 11:00 AM.
