Patricia Costello

Mary Patricia (Pat) Costello, Age 92, of Duxbury, MA, died peacefully on April 25, 2020. Patricia was the daughter of Michael F. and Bridie (O’Sullivan) Joyce and step-mother Barbara (Higgins) Joyce.  and sister to the late Patrick Joyce and Alice Klumpp. Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, James Costello. Loving mother of Ann Marie Chandler, Barbara Bartlett and her husband Douglas, Clare Costello, James Costello and his wife Shelly, Patricia McGill and her husband Robert, Thomas Costello and his wife Marisa, Timothy and his wife Brigitte. Cherished grandmother of James Chandler, Parker Chandler, Alicia Gaignard, Monica Chandler, Helen and Emma Bartlett, Jack, Mary, and Katherine Costello, Andrew and Katherine McGill, Brendan and Aidan Costello, Elise and Kaylee Costello. Great-grandmother of Paul and Maeve Chandler, Ainsleigh and Sullivan Chandler and Evalyn and Margret Gaignard. She is also survived by many Costello and Joyce nieces and nephews along with many cousins in the USA and Ireland.

A private grave side service was held at Mayflower Cemetery. Memorial Service to be held at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers to Holy Family Church Duxbury, MA or Duxbury Thrift Shop Scholarship Fund.

Patricia was born and raised in St. Peter’s Parish in Dorchester. Before her marriage to Jim, she attended Bentley School of Accounting and worked for General Motors Co. in Allston. Patricia and Jim began family life in St. Mary’s Parish, Dedham. Patricia was active in the parish and in local government as a Town Meeting Member, on the Finance Committee and Conservation Commission.

Family connections and Duxbury Beach drew the growing family to Duxbury in 1972. As a longtime parishioner at Holy Family Church, she was a member of the Parish Council and the Holy Family Woman’s Club. Patricia also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, League of Catholic Women and Mass Citizens for Life.

Patricia continued her involvement in town affairs as an active participant at Duxbury Town Meeting and as an election worker. She also served on the Finance Committee. Patricia was the longtime treasurer of the Duxbury Thrift Shop. For several years, Patricia also had her own taxi business, Costello’s Livery, where she drove people all over the South Shore, the Cape and Logan Airport.

Patricia was immensely proud of her Irish heritage. She loved to travel, making many trips to Connemara, County Galway Ireland to visit relatives and friends. Patricia and Jim loved ocean cruises with dear friends.

She spent many sunny days at Duxbury Beach with her children, grandchildren and great-grand-children. Patricia and Jim enjoyed hosting any celebration that brought everyone together. Throughout her long life, her faith was her strength, family her highest priority.
