Robert (Bob) Dean Gertsen passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Boston and raised in Hyde Park, Bob graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1963, where he was enrolled in the machine shop program within the school’s vocational-technical curriculum.
At the age of 16, Bob met the love of his life, Anne Coffin. They married on November 20, 1965, and relocated to Hanover, where they raised four children: Robert Jr., John, Deanna, and Kurt.
After being honorably discharged from the National Guard, Bob briefly worked for Keystone Manufacturing in Dorchester before embarking on a remarkable 44-year career with MIT.
In Hanover, Bob was an active volunteer for his children's various activities, notably in scouting, baseball, and football. He cherished attending these events, whether on stage or on the field, always accompanied by Anne.
Bob was a stand-up guy and a true gentleman, known for his generosity—he would literally give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Principled and straightforward, he never minced words. Always ready for a party, he had a gift for making those around him feel at ease, filling the air with laughter.
His dedication to family and his hard working mentality were beautifully balanced by his easygoing, humorous, and loyal nature. These traits are what we will miss most and what will keep his memory alive.
In addition to his wife and children, Bob is survived by daughter in law: Kristen Gertsen, four grandchildren: Tyler, Sadie, Vera, and Greta, beloved sister in law & brother in law Mary & John Maniscalco, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were like family.
Unfortunately, Bob spent the last several years declining due to Alzheimer’s disease. Even as the illness gradually took away his body's ability to function, he never complained or felt sorry for himself. His positivity shone through, and he loved visits, calls, and the occasional treat like iced coffee. The disease could not diminish his spirit, which will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Visiting hours will at Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St. (Rte. 53), Hanover on Friday, May 15th at 11am followed by a funeral home service at 1pm. Burial will be private.
