Virginia Lorraine (Vachon) Cook of Pembroke, originally from Bridgewater, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 13, 2024 at the age of 91. She was the beloved wife of over 56 years to her late husband Donald J. Cook and daughter of the late Albert and Mabel Vachon.
Virginia, known as “Ginny” to her family and friends, was the fun-loving sister to her late brothers Richard, Carlton and Albert Vachon, and sisters Janice Backgren and husband Carl and Ruth Kilbey and husband Charles. She was the dear mother to her son Thomas Cook and wife Kathryn of Moorestown, NJ, and two daughters; Patrice Cook and her fiance Terrance Maloney of Middleborough, and Janice Leonard (Cook) and her husband Stuart of Pembroke. Virginia was the loving grandmother to her six grandchildren: Timothy and wife Ashley, Nicholas, Andrew and Caroline Cook; Kimberly Pinkham (Leonard) and husband Rodney, and Eric Leonard. She was also great-grandmother to Mira Cook.
She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law Rita (Cappucci) Vachon of Woburn, MA, sister-in-law Penelope Fife and her late husband Charles of South Carolina, brother-in-law Robert Cook and his late wife Eleanor of Swansea, and sister-in-law Marilyn Joynt and her husband Gerald of Somerset. She is predeceased by sister-in-law Barbara Garant and her husband Al of Fall River. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Virginia graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1950. After graduating she began working at the A&P in Boston. Later, she worked at Jordan Hospital for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and traveling, which included a trip to Cuba. Virginia was an avid player of the card game whist and was a life-long candlepin bowler. She appreciated the team comradery, the competition – and she liked to win!
A wonderful pianist, she studied for many years and was the featured soloist at her high school graduation. She passed her love for music on to all her children and grandchildren. Virginia was also the “Dr. Doolittle” of Pembroke. She loved to watch the wildlife that would frequent her backyard – deer, pheasants, turkeys, foxes – and she was always ready to encourage the rabbits and quail to come closer to her porch. A devoted wife and mother, she finished her life as a true matriarch of the family. No one ever heard Virginia speak a bad word about anyone. She was loyal, caring, and compassionate. If you were lucky enough to know her, your life is richer for the experience.
