Wilfred E. Roberts

Wilfred E. Roberts, 89, of Whitman passed away surrounded by his family on October 30, 2018 after a short illness.  He was born in Norton, MA on September 19, 1929 to the late Edward and Gladys Roberts.

Willie is survived by his children Alta Roberts of Taunton, Avis Roberts of Whitman, Debra Schnyer of Hanover, Lisa McLaughlin of Whitman, and Frederick Roberts of Dover, NH, his grandchildren Robert Jolly, Kevin Schnyer, Hillary Gilmore, Patrick McLaughlin, Abra and Ransom Roberts, and great grandchildren Collin McLaughlin, Henry and George Schnyer, and Celia Gilmore. He is predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Genevieve (Voudren), and his children Wilfred Roberts Jr., and Genevieve Jolly.

Willie was a Korean War Veteran, serving as a train engineer in the 724 Trans Jry Opr Bn, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. After returning from the war he went to work for Plymouth Rubber Corp. in Canton (35 years), and Avon Sole. In 1987 Willie began working for the town of Whitman as the custodian of what he referred to as “The Grand Old Lady”, the Whitman Town Hall. It was in this position that he was able to find the most satisfaction from his work life, serving the town he called home for over 60 years. Dedicated to the community he was a member of VFW Post 697, and was Past Commander of the Post and VFW District 12. He devoted much of his time in service to his fellow veterans and derived much satisfaction through these activities. He was also a member of various local clubs including the French, Bertocci, Eagles, and Elks.

After retiring in 2005 Willie enjoyed travelling with his family and friends. He was an avid NASCAR fan and followed closely all Boston sports teams. However, by far his favorite athlete of all time was Chuck (Concrete Charlie) Bednarik of the Philadelphia Eagles, the last true two way player in the NFL. He loved watching vintage westerns, spending time with his family, friends, and his French Bulldog Honey Bo Bo. Although short in stature, Willie was a larger than life character who will be sorely missed by all.

Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Homes, 45 East Water Street, Rockland, on Sunday from 2-6 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9 AM at Holy Ghost Church, 518 Washington Street, Whitman. Burial to follow at Mount Zion Cemetery.
