Born and raised in Somerville, Bill was the son of the late John and Mary Madden and brother of the late Jack Madden and Mary Anderton. In 1958, Bill married the love of his life, Nancy Madden. Together they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage and built a loving family centered on faith, travel, kindness, and devotion to one another.
Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a radio instructor. He went on to earn both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northeastern University, where he also served as an adjunct professor. A lifelong learner with a deep intellectual curiosity, Bill was an avid reader who was always eager to learn something new. Bill spent most of his professional career with United Fruit/United Brands, serving in various accounting and financial roles. He later continued his career with Barry Wright Corporation.
Bill and Nancy raised their family in Hanover, where they formed lifelong friendships and created happy memories for their children. Above all else, Bill cherished being a father and grandfather. He spent countless years cheering on his children and grandchildren at track meets, Little League games, dance recitals, school plays and concerts, graduations, and many other milestones and everyday moments.
Nothing brought Bill greater joy than hearing about the accomplishments, travels, hopes, dreams, and daily lives of his children and grandchildren. Bill was an active member of the St. Mary Parish community where he served as a lector. Bill spent his final years at Allerton House in Hingham, attending events with his new friends.
He leaves behind his sons, Daryl Madden and his wife Betsy Madden of Leesburg, Virginia, and Lawrence Madden and his wife Irene Dasco Madden of Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Holly Madden-Merrill. Bill is also survived by his seven cherished grandchildren: Ryan Madden, Nicholas Madden, Kelly Prince, Zoe Madden, Gabby Munoz, Kade Madden, and August Madden; and his three great-grandchildren, Luke, Noah, and Capri.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 3 at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of the Angels Church (St. Mary’s), 392 Hanover Street (Route 139), Hanover. Burial will follow at Hanover Center Cemetery.
Bill will be remembered for his gentle nature, devotion to family, kindness, love of learning, and the steady encouragement and pride he shared with all who knew and loved him.
