He was born in Boston, MA on May 1, 1933, the son of the late Myles McDonough and Katherine (Stanton) McDonough, both natives of Galway, Ireland. A star runner at Boston Latin High School, Bill joined the Navy in 1950 and served aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Perkins during the Korean War. Following an honorable discharge he enrolled at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he served as class Vice President and graduated in 1958. He had a long and successful career as a Professional Engineer, working around the world on projects as diverse as power transmission lines, desalination plants, and Boston’s “Big Dig.”
During his years at Mass Maritime, Bill would surreptitiously “jump ship” to visit his future wife Dorothy “Dottie” (Teevens). They raised three children, William McDonough and his wife Ellen of Hanson, MA, Kathleen (McDonough) Costa and her husband Alan of Nantucket, MA, and Sean McDonough and his wife Catherine of Park Ridge, IL. Bill was the proud “Papa” to six grandchildren, Eamonn McDonough and his wife Rebecca of Fort Drum, NY; Keely Battle and her husband Jeremy of Washington, DC; Devon McDonough and his wife Leslie of East Bridgewater, MA; Conor McDonough and his wife Christine of Washington, DC; and Maeve and Annie McDonough of Park Ridge, IL. He was great grandfather to Mirra, Ellery and Reese McDonough, Evelyn and Levon McDonough, and Quinn Battle.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Dottie, his sisters Joanne Cavallini, Peggy Collins, Alice Yacobian and Mary McDonough, and his brother Myles McDonough.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover Street, Hanover, MA on Monday, December 27, at 10:00 am. There will be no wake. Burial will be at Hanover Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in Bill’s name to St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church.
