William Joe Scanlon

Mr. William "Joe" Scanlon, beloved husband of the late Louise C, Farrar Scanlon, passed away on Wednesday, February 11th, at Kindred Hospital in Stoughton, at the age of 88, after a brief illness. Joe grew up in Dorchester and graduated from English High School in 1938. He enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II and received several medals as a Seaman 1st Class. After the war, he worked for the Charlestown Navy Yard, retiring in 1973. Mr. Scanlon and his family moved to Hanover in 1969, where they enjoyed country living. He loved to shop, visit friends, and attend Mass at Saint Mary's Church. He was also known for playing Santa Claus for family, friends, handicapped children and school children, always quick with a joke or a story. Joe is survived by his daughter, Louise Scanlon-Oberg and her husband, Robert Oberg of Canton and West Dennis plus his other daughter, Kathleen Henningson and her husband, Ray Henningson Sr., with whom he resided in Brockton since 2004. Joe was the beloved "Papa" to Raymond "Matthew" Henningson and his wife Tracey of Brockton, Jason Henningson and his fiancee, Christine Bettendorf of Weymouth, Heather Oberg and her fiance Kenneth Brown of Swansea, and Laurel Oberg of Canton. Papa was also the Great-grandfather to Meghan and Sean Hennigson with whom he played daily to their mutual delight He also leaves behind two faithful pets, Peanuts and Cannon, who gave him hours of pleasure; Joe was the loving brother of the late John Scanlon, George Scanlon, Robert Scanlon and Esther O'Brien plus many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all who met him and saw the Irish twinkle in his eyes and quick smile. Remember him with a laugh or story, not a tear, as that was the way he would want it. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 in St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover Street, Rte 139 in Hanover. Interment in Hanover Center Cemetery. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Rte 53 in HANOVER on Monday from 4-8 PM.
