John ‘Gerard’ Currie, age 72 of Hanson, MA, died at home on April 29, 2026 after a brief battle with Pancreatic Cancer. John was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia to his late parents John E. Currie and Christena (MacMaster) Currie.
John immigrated with his family to Massachusetts in 1961 and settled in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Roxbury, MA. Here he attended parochial school, began lifelong friendships and started his love affair with the sport of hockey.
After graduating from Mission High School in 1972, he attended Northeastern University, where he would eventually graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree. It was here he met his beloved wife Donna and they married on June 26, 1976.
They bought their first home in Framingham, MA where they had their first child and soon after moved to Rutland, VT where he worked as a Controller and eventually had their second child.
The family moved to Hanson in 1984 where they finally settled and became a part of the community. John dedicated his time to his family as well as the Hanson Youth Soccer program as a coach and played on the St Joseph softball team for several years. Throughout his years of volunteerism, he served on various town committees, including the Water Commission, Capital Improvement Committee and oversaw the Finance Committee as Chairman for several years.
John was able to reignite his love for hockey as his children got older. He ended his hockey career in December of 2025 due to his illness, having served as both a board member of the South Shore Classics Hockey League and a captain to the team he played for. It was here he truly shined - making friends, leading teams to championships and sharing his love and devotion to the game with others.
John also greatly enjoyed camping, spending many weekends and holidays with his family in their tent, then pop-up, then trailer. Finally, he and Donna settled on a 5th wheel and a seasonal site at Bailey’s Camping Resort in Scarborough, ME.
John spent his career as a Chief Financial Officer for a span of 49 years. He worked in a variety of settings, but spend the last 20+ years in the law industry. He was hard-pressed to retire and continued to support coworkers as he transitioned into retirement, refusing to truly settle into it.
John is predeceased by his parents, his brother Gary Currie, and his sister Joanne Currie. John is survived by his wife Donna, of almost 50 years; his daughter Melissa Valachovic and her husband Adam of Hanson, MA; his son Mel Currie and his wife Lindsey of Northampton, MA.
