She was born to the late Roland and Catherine (Stoddard) Alger and raised in East Bridgewater. She is predeceased by her husband Daniel O. Bosworth Sr. and son Dana A. Bosworth.
Ruth had a beautiful smile and presence when she walked into a room. She knew what it meant to live life to the fullest and did so daily.
She married her husband Dan at 21 yrs old and they had 5 children. In her youth she was an award-winning barrel racer at Boston Garden as well as a well-travelled stewardess for Pan Am. Ruth was named Miss Marshfield in 1953. She went on to be the postmaster for the town of Hanson for 33 years. Later she drove a school bus route and then for the sports trips or field trips. The kids fondly referred to her as Mrs. B. She never tolerated bad language and always had a box of cheez-its or snacks for them. In the early years, when doing her typical route, she spotted a child that fell through the ice. She immediately stopped the bus ran onto the ice into the water and saved the little boy’s life. That’s the type of person she was, no hesitation.
Ruth was the consummate host; she loved entertaining and put on huge Thanksgiving dinners followed up by what she called “sandwiches” in the evening. She would have all her siblings and their families come. No one ever went hungry that was for sure. Ruth always had enough apple pies for everyone to take some home. She loved making them and having her grandson Daniel do the apples.
Ruth and her husband Dan enjoyed RVing and spent many winters in Florida. They were big Nascar fans and were in regular attendance at the Daytona 500 as well Talladega Speedway in the Pecan Grove. She was excited to share the “apple pie” moonshine she’d found when she returned home. Her RV had Lucky Lady painted on it as she was the luckiest person anyone knew, whether at Bingo or the local lobster or meat raffles, Ruth rarely went home without a win.
Ruth and Dan were also avid dancers. Even into her later years, she loved music and was a regular at Karaoke at the local places that offered it. She was very close with her siblings and enjoyed the times she picked blueberries or corn with her sisters.
Ruth was also known for her green thumb, she could make anything grow whether it be a vegetable or a flower. She always said “only the strong survive”. Yet all of her plants made it! Her yard was always a show piece and she would even do plantings at other family members houses. Ruth always enjoyed having her family at the house as often as possible for cookouts or lobsters. She would pick the lobster bodies and make her famous lobster stuffing and share it with everyone. You could hardly leave the house without her giving you extra food. Well into her later years she was a regular at Sandys Coffee Shop enjoying coffee and conversation with her friends. To say she will be missed doesn’t capture the magnitude her absence leaves. She was a wife, mother, nanny and great nanny……….and she was deeply loved.
Ruth is survived by her children, Daniel Bosworth Jr. (Dawn), Danielee Bosworth, Donald Bosworth (Dianne), Donnalee Smith (Michael). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jolene Mile, Corene Miles, Stephen Miles, Olivia Brousseau (Henri), Daniel O. Bosworth III, and Michael Smith (Ashley). Ruth also leaves behind 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her sister Esther Mondeau and predeceased by her brothers Roland Alger Jr, and William Alger, and sisters Marion Gibson and sister Elizabeth Wood.
Visitation Service for Ruth will be held at Sullivan Funeral Home, 814 Indian Head Street, (Corner of Routes 14 & 58) in Hanson on July 19th at 9am followed by a funeral home services at 11:30am. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 20th at 10am at Central Cemetery, 60 Hemlock Lane, Halifax.
