Dan was raised in Hicksville, Ohio, and spent much of his adult life in Harlan, Indiana. For 25 years, he was a dedicated Superintendent at Shawnee Construction, where he ran large-scale projects with precision and high expectations. He was known for being particular—because he took pride in doing things right—and the work he oversaw was a reflection of his excellence.
Dan had a passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles and loved hitting the open road with his riding buddies. His all-time favorite trip was to Sturgis, a ride he talked about often. He was also a diehard Ohio State Buckeyes fan, proudly claiming the title of their #1 supporter.
More than anything, Dan had a huge heart. He was the guy who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. He loved to have a good time, whether it was laughing with friends, cheering on the Buckeyes, or blasting Kid Rock. He especially loved his grandkids and supported them in everything they did.
Dan was adopted at birth by Robert and Jackie Bassett, and raised with love by Jackie, Robert, and later Earl Long.
He is survived by his birth mother, Sally Sowers; his brother, Terry Bassett; stepdaughters, Greta Boes and Nikki Hoeppner; grandchildren, Rhett Eicher, Raegan Eicher, Jordan Boes, Ashton Boes, Gray Hoeppner, and Gage Hoeppner; and his beloved dog, Sonny.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Harris; his adoptive parents, Robert Bassett and Jackie (Mansfield) Long; his stepfather, Earl Long; his brother, Thomas Boyce; his sister, Amy Jo Dickerson; his stepdaughter, Kim Eicher; and grandson, Austin Eicher.
