He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before returning home to build a life centered on family and community.
John was a faithful member of North Scipio Community Church, where he found great joy in playing the violin during worship services. He especially loved sharing the timeless melodies of the old hymns.
A lifelong car enthusiast, John could often be found restoring and building engines for his classic cars and trucks or admiring old hot rods and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. One of his favorite pastimes was taking rides with his beloved wife, Connie, in a Harley equipped with a sidecar so they could enjoy the open road together.
John never met a stranger. He loved to talk, share stories, and strike up conversations with anyone he met. Above all else, John's greatest love was his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Connie Benjamin; his children, Barbara (Tom) Coffield, John Joseph "Jack" (Carol) Benjamin II, and James (Linda) Benjamin; his grandchildren, Christine (Jay) Lauer, Emily Coffield, and Rachel Coffield; his great-grandchildren, Alexander Lauer, Elliett Lauer, and Josephine Lauer; and his sister, Carole (Tom) Sjedin; and his beloved dog, Katie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Benjamin, and his brother, Jim Benjamin.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at North Scipio Christian Church, 23630 IN-37, Harlan, Indiana 46743.
