

She was born September 21, 1915, in Davie County, and was a daughter to the late Martin Luther and Mae Ratledge Godbey. Mrs. York was a graduate of Harmony High School and was one of two remaining graduates of the class of 1932. She was a member of Clarksbury United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school in her earlier years and was a member of the United Methodist Women and received a lifetime membership honor. She was also a member of the V-Point Community Homemaker’s Club and participated in basket weaving, making dolls, quilting and other activities. She made baskets as gifts for family and friends and quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her flower gardens, reading and traveling throughout the United States. She enjoyed playing dominoes and rook with family and friends, always finding the greatest joy at family gatherings at her home.
Her husband of 58 years, Buford York, preceded her in death in 1992. She worked along side her husband in the family auction business, York Auction, and on the family farm while raising and mentoring her seven children. She continued to work at auctions with her son until the age of 75. For a number of years, she worked side by side with special friend, Louann Jones at Jones Grocery.
She was also preceded in death by sisters; Sally Foster, Thelma Blackwelder, Pauline Stroud, Minnie Gill, Mary Kathryn Campbell, Mildred Johnson, and Elizabeth Thigpen; and brothers, Bill Godbey and Joe Godbey.
Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Carolyn Moore and husband, Robert, of Harmony, Calvin York and wife, Ann, of Olin, Horace York and wife, Joan, of Clemmons, Ann Lowe and husband, John, of Mooresville, Elaine Shuping and husband, Cooter, of Salisbury, Bill York and wife, Helen, of Harmony, and Denise Cline and husband, Bob, of Statesville; 14 grandchildren; Wayne Moore (Jennifer) of Gold Hill, Gail Nellis (Teddy) of Statesville, Kathy Helgeson (Baird) or St. Paul, MN, Byron York (Valerie) and Karen Wagoner both of Olin, Michael York (Michele) of Indian Trail, Angela Agner (Jim) of Advance, Mandy Johnson (Joe) and Chris Lowe (Nikki) both of Huntersville, Annette Harris (Joe) of China Grove, Dare York of Statesville, Emily Salter (Benji) of Alexander, Eddie Busque (Angela) of Clover SC, and Daniel Busque of Statesville; and 21 great-grandchildren Bradley Moore, Heather and Brian Nellis, Grayson and Zachary Helgeson, Anna and Kara Wagoner, Payton, Addison and Macie York, Britni and Kevin York, Hunter Tysinger, Matthew and Katie Johnson, Jack Lowe, Jake Harris, Avery and Lila Salter, Hunter and Sydney Busque.
For the past 8 years, she was cared for in her home by all of her children and special caregiver Evelyn Harris and Doris Church. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County.
A service to celebrate Mrs. York's life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Clarksbury United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mandy Jones and Arnie Corriher officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
