She was born on February 12, 1934, the 5th of ten children born to the late Clyde McCoy and Tabitha Trivette York. She grew up in Union Grove, Harmony and Davie County and attended Harmony School.
Doris met her husband, the late Kenneth Baker Sloan, who provided guitar accompaniment for the York Trio (made up of Doris, her late brother, David and her mother, Tabitha) while singing at a Statesville radio station in 1951. They were married on July 3, 1952, and enjoyed 51 years together before his passing in 2003. They raised three children, Debbie, Danny and Scott, and loved every minute they could spend with their seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Jerry) Price of Pittsboro; her two sons, Danny (Debra) Sloan of Stony Point; and Scott (Margaret) Sloan of Statesville; five grandchildren, Eric (Rebecca) Myers of Apex; Angie Sloan of West Chester, PA; Ben, Gabe and Addie Sloan of Statesville; two step-grandchildren, Jay Price and Jill Ware of Manteo; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Myers, and Layla Charis Myers (due around Christmas); three step-great-grandchildren, Jessie and Ethan Ware, and Trevor Price. She is also survived by four sisters, Lillian (Arlie) Rash, Nettie (Aaron) Carter, Mae Foster and Sylvia (Jerry) Eddinger.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, two sisters (Cleo and Janie) and three brothers (Lonnie, David and Donnie Ray).
Doris was fun-loving and full of the kind of spunk that brought merriment to those around her. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, singing, playing the piano, trips to the mountains, bird-watching, and baking and giving sugar cookies. She loved her church family at Union Grove United Methodist, and their love for her has been shown in many very tangible ways especially over these last very difficult months of battling an extended illness. She worked at Clara’s Clothes and Union Grove Apparel.
